    P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)

    Many may know about the Spitfire Brotherhood thread here on RCU. I started that thread to allow those who wanted to share build tips, information, and photos of their Spitfire aircraft.

    Because of the great response that thread has received and continues to receive I wanted to do the same for another seldom seen RC aircraft as compared to others.

    I have always admired the P-40 since it was in fact the first WWII fighter aircraft to encounter our then enemy in the Pacific West, and also to have reaped havoc against the Luftwaffe along side in some cases the Spitfire.

    A lot of air battles we fought and won by these two aircraft before the more popular and out performing fighters joined the fight.

    In 2011, a modeling friend built a1/7 scale TF P-40 kit. A short time after completion, and before any flight time was put on the aircraft he handed the airplane to me and my little helper, the Talimena Kidd as a gift.

    A few days ago a friend and I were talking about a framed up 1/7 scale TF P-40 he was having built for his young son who likes warbirds and showed an interest in conducting an electric powered conversion on it.

    Now before you jump out of your flight suit hear me out.

    I to have some smaller electric warbirds, and my little helper and I have quite a lot of fun with them. The overall convenience is great, and this was an opportunity for he and I to increase our knowledge of larger electric aircraft along with my modeling friend.

    Luckily I have a local hobby shop where the owner is very well versed in the large aircraft electric technologies. His experience has involved him with powering 50cc IMAC aircraft with electric power that was very competitive in competition, and he is now engaged with electric powered Small Unmanned Systems. How lucky can a person be to have this wealth of knowledge available?

    The unpainted P-40 is receiving the electric conversion, while the painted one is currently having a DLE-20 installed. I can say however the Power 60 E flight motor seen on the test stand is turning the Master Airscrew 15x7 3 blade prop at 7000 RPM at 45 amps with 10 amps remaining for 55 amp continuous operation. It is my belief this powerplant can produce equal output as the DLE-20 which turned this prop at 8400 RPM on the test stand. The electric power package consist of the E flight Power 60 motor, an 80 amp speed control, and a 5000 mah 6 cell, 22volt Lipo.

    In addition to this, my rough hanging weight comparisons were about equal at an estimated 12 pounds each in their full flight configurations.

    We have four Skyshark ARF P40's here in Space City RC Club, Katy, Texas. Great flying planes! Green one has BME 50, British version has DA 60, Flying Tiger #64 has a G62. Flying Tiger#47 has Precision Eagle 4.2. All have Sierra retracts. Paul Curry

    My Dad always Loved the P-40 and when a friend was selling a nib kyosho 55 P-40.. we got it. it's 56" ws has a 55 rimfire, gp 60 esc..14 X 10 prop. retracts,flapsrud,elev two servos on ailerons..My Dad keeps it so when he wants to fly the batteries get charged..at 7 1/2 lbs it flys scale like..we want a bigger one so pretty soon...

    I have something of a "love-hate" relationship with the P-40. I love it and it hates me! I've had three r/c models of the P-40 thus far, only one of which made it past the first flight! And the one that did get past the first flight, seen in the pics below, suffered something of an unusual demise after only about a dozen flights or so. While I have owned, flown, and crashed three P-40's to date I still have actually yet to build one for myself. (I did build a Bates E model for a customer once.) That will hopefully change in the not too distant future as I intend to build a 1/5 scale P-40 of some sort from my own plans. I'm leaning towards a P-40B/C model but I really like the long tailed F/M/N versions as well.

    My second TF Gold Edition P-40 is shown below (builder unknown), pics by my good friend Joe Balabon. The TF kit was a good flyer but suffered from a couple of unusual characteristics and was something of a hand full on the ground. Looked great on a low flyby though! Unfortunately I don't have pics of the first TF bird I owned which was a Scale Masters veteran built by Bob Frey. My very first P-40 was a Byron kit and I don't have pics of that one either. The Byron bird had some very nasty habits and most of the ones I'm aware of ended there lives in a snap-spin situation on either take off or landing.

    I've been fortunate to see at least a dozen different restored P-40's fly, a few of which are seen below. I really wish now that I had been much more diligent about taking pictures during my younger days.

    Here is mine. Yellow Aircraft with ZDZ 60. I bought it from a guy on RCU RTF. It's my first warbird. I placed a JR gyro on the rudder and tailwheel steering to help with turn coordination and takeoffs. Still trying to get it proped to my liking. Fist prop was a Beila 20x10 (in pic). Flew ok. The latest one is a Beila 20x10 scale. Looks better but doesnt quite have the performance of the other. I just got a new TBM adjustable and plan on fitting it today. Its a nice looking prop but the pitch guides are not accurate. Each blade has different pitch. There is thread that tells how to make a pitch guage and that is my job for today. Get the prop drilled and pitch set (20x12) and give it a try this weekend.

    A fishing friend of mine used to fly the one below. It's located at the Virginia Military Aviation Museum in VABeach. I was in the back seat of an Avenger taking the photo. My Giant Scale Models version of that plane is also shown.

    Here's another Skyshark P-40 that was bashed. Replaced the wingtips with scale tips, fiberglassed the wings, replaced gear pods with Top Flite P-40 pods, dressed it up with panel lines, painted with latex paint, and improved exhaust stacks. Powered by a Zenoah G62 and Sierra retracts. Very fast with the G62.

    I'll join in. I aquired a Top Flite kit built P-40. It had fixed gear and a Enya 90 four stroke. Weight about 10.5 lbs. Flew it twice that way. Had enough power to fly but that was all. I added Century Jet retracks and an OS 120 FS. It had more power but gained weight. Now around 12 lbs. Later converted to gas with a DLE 20 and to a "C" model with different cowl. This increased the power. Still the plane was a hand full to fly. Had to be on your toes for take off. If you pulled a loop or turn too tight it would try to snap. Landed fast because of the weight. Added a stall strip to the right wing to try to tame the stall. It helped. Still the plane was overall soon much of a hand full to fly, it just wasn't fun. I decommissioned the beast and put most of its hard ware in another plane.

    I also have a VQ P-40. 63" wing span with Lado electric retracts and a DLE 20. Moved the gear inboard to more scale position. It is a little heavy at 10.5 lbs but flys much better than the Top Flite.

    Had 120 flights on the TF before it was retired. About 150 flights on the VQ.

    I had a BH "C" model P-40 I converted to a P-36. It had too much positive incident in the wing and flew in a strange nose down attitude. I crashed it, totally pilot error. Had not flow it a while. Was landing, a few feet off the ground but it was slowing down not settling in (wing incident). I let it get too slow the decided I had better go around, hit the throttle, it started torque rolling to left. Hit right rudder to correct, it snapped right and cart wheeled down runway. Plane is totaled or at least not worht fixing. However the "rare" P-36 cowl survived with no damage. I'm thinking of getting the Top Flight ARF P-40 and converting it to a P-36. By all reports the ARF flies good.

    Can I join this brotherhood, too? I have a Yellow P-40 in the work that most of you guys here already know. Work on the P-40 is slow due to extensive travelling for my job. But I haven't quit working on it. Still working on the aesthetic details every weekend.

    I'm in! I also have the TF arf and I dress it up a little nothing crazy. Put a DLE20 in her and as one of the guys at field says it runs like a raped ape! I am using the sucky Robart 615's and they just keep twisting collasping,etc. Idon't understand why they don't improve these things. I have a set of the new wingspan retracts coming soon so I hope to get back in the air forsome cool fall flying.

    Well I just can't resist this brotherhood as just like Chad I've had a love/hate relationship with the P40. My first one, a TF red box kit with fixed gear loved me. My second one, a Brian Taylor P40 modified to a "B" model did everything it could to make me look bad. Somehow I managed not to kill it. So in my lengthy build queue is a JB P40C with a terrific Vic fiberglass fuse and Sierra retracts as well as another Brian Taylor P40 an "E" this time.

    I hesitate to post, not being on nearly the same level as the rest of you guys, but the title did say ALL P-40's are welcome!

    The P-40 has always been one of my favorites and I have three at the moment. I have a Red Box kit that was about 75% done when I shelved it a few years ago. I had been out of the hobby for a few years mostly due to lack of time but have gotten back to it this year, mostly because of the ease of electrics. I just got this Airfield 1400mm P-40 on Wednesday and can't wait to finish it up and fly it.



    I also picked up this box of lumber and plans that they tell me can be turned into a Ziroli P-40, but that's a more long term project.

    Hi Chad,

    Thanks, no I never did. Last year I felt that I needed to to legitimize the model and fly her so I bought a TF Mustang to hone my skills. Well I couldn't leave well enough alone and am in the process of making a more scale cowl, scoop etc. which is taking forever so it got pushed back again. I must say all the comments so far on this thread are instilling me with allot of confidence.

    Well would love to join , my history on the P40 is started as a kid with a Cox 049 powered plastic model .
    Then Gulliows , Top Flight Red Box , Pica 1/6 scale P40 , Balsa Products P40, 2 VQ P40ties , CMP 73" P40 , FMS EPO P40 , LX 79" EPO P40 I know i missed a few lol .
    I just love the plane and its history !!
