Hangar 9 60cc Corsair
#1205
Hi,
Funny, I read about the $82 wheels and thought, "these guys are absolutely nuts." I was thinking there was no way in hell I'd pay that much for a silly wheel on a hot-glue ARF with iron-on film, but then I realized that all my jets have wheels that are half the size (and aren't powder-coated) that cost $125/pair WITH FOAM TIRES! I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Now I don't think the wheel price is so outrageous since I've been doing it this whole time and not even thinking about it....
I just received a TF GS Corsair to build for a customer. I gotta say, it was a huge disappointment when opening the box. There was some damage, so I took pics and sent them to my customer to deal with Tower about it. I'm not sure what he's going to do (pay me extra to fix the problems or have them send him another) but I did try to nudge him toward this Corsair. After his gold-level discount or whatever, this Corsair only cost him $600 shipped, so I don't think he is going to feel like the extra $400 is justified for what is, honestly, still a 'hot-glue Chinese ARF with iron-on covering.'
I really wish Horizon would at least consider doing a few in ARC. I'd pull the trigger on the spot. My customer considered having me strip and glass this TF Corsair, but you can tell by looking that under the covering, the wood construction is very rough. I'd spend a lot of time filling and sanding to get it to a point where it didn't look bumpy and wavy under the glass. From the looks of the pics, the H9 Corsair looks to be much better built in that regard.
Kirk, how smooth is the wood finish on yours under the covering?

When I stripped the covering from my plane, it was fairly smooth. The factory had filler in places. The solid areas would have been easily sanded smooth for .75 oz cloth on it. Just out of curiosity, how would you address the open bays in the outer wings? Sheet with balsa and then glass it?

Mirored,
I was just thinking about that! The honest answer at this point is "I don't know." What I thought about was either just sheeting it as you said or maybe planing down the ribs in the open bays (or removing cap strips if they have them) then building a flat balsa frame with its own cap strips. This frame would be carefully 'tack-covered' with solartex and glued into the open bay after glassing is complete and before priming. Once it was all glued in place, I would fill the seam where the frame was glued, then tighten up the solartex with a heat gun before priming. I did something similar to a Dynaflite giant Spit back in the day.

LOL,
I don't think they're cheap, I just realized how dumb I was being when I balked at the price so vehemently. Funny thing is, I think most of the guys building/flying these things are jet jocks. Part-timers at least.

I didn't glass mine, I used monokote, paint and graphic material for finish. If I were to glass it, I would infill where the bays are by removing the caps (looked fairly easy when I had mine apart) and put in balsa sheeting permanently. The control surfaces would need to be sheeted as well if you want all glass. Wouldn't be that hard and would probably be a net zero change in weight since fiberglass .75 oz cloth is not that much weight if done properly.

Hi,
Oh, I know. Compared to a set of wheels for the Y/A warbirds ($98/pair), they're pricier. The thing is, ours have foam tires and are not powder-coated so if these have rubber tires (or anything better than foam) and are dressed up in powder-coat already, they suddenly don't seem so unreasonable.
Really, they should just quote the per pair price and let people inquire about the per-wheel price should they lose one. That way, it won't have such a sticker-shock effect IMO.
Perspective.

As far as the open bays and control surfaces, on the full scale they were covered with fabric. I will be doing the same. Fabric covering arrives tomorrow. I will glass the wing then cover the open bays. I'll post photos when I do it.

Want Corsair wheel/gear sticker shock take a look at Sierra GS gear for the Carf Corsair!
A nice alternative to the Robart wheels are the Davinci Machine wheels with the diamond tread pattern! These are sweet and if it wasnt for their little bit bigger diameter I would have bought a set for the TF GS P-51. They would probably fit in the Corsair wheel wells.
Dia= 5.5in

HI.
These are the approx dimensions :
Length =590mm
Circumference at approx widest point = 360mm
There is a 5mm "lip" around the drop tank.
Hope this helps.

Chris,
The Davinci Machining (http://www.davincimachining.com/hobbyzone/) wheels are beautiful, but you have not mentioned their price yet. They are not powder coated and they cost about $125/wheel last time I checked.
I did a wheel comparison (price/weight/looks) for the 1/6th scale Corsair a few years ago. It should be fairly relevant :

This a ribbed and detailed wheel. They dont offer an actual Corsair wheel but this close. $230 for the pair.
