I us mostly Hi-Tech servos, which I really like, with JR transmitter/recievers and have had absolutly no problems. The servos you mentioned should be just fine but I am not familar with the Futaba. I am not an electronics expert - just a user. My only concern with the metal gear stuff (which I use) is to keep an eye on gear train wear and you must use a mild loctite on servo screw threads to prevent gassers from vibrating them loose. Some of my buddies swear by the 6 volt nicads but I only use 6 volts on my Duralite (litho) battaries which are great. My nicads, which are on about 90% of my planes (including my giant scale stuff) are always at 4.8 volt. My P51 is on dual 4.8 volt nicads (2400ma each or larger). the extra nicad is on a seperate switch and plugs into a spare reciever port. This is my simple backup system. They do not drain each other - simple but affective, has never created a problem (bet this raises a conversation??!!). The P51 with the higher torg servos work just fine.
The covering bugged me to death - That is why Im recovering mine.
I got my standoffs from: rcshowcase.com I will need to get the measurments for you, I am at the office now.

JoeEagle that looks great! One more question is the engine installation with Keleo exhaust you show in your pictures set up so I could attach a propeller directly to the engine or is it orientated such that I would need the prop reduction drive? Thanks

I do not want to put a wet blanket on your engine installation. My concern is with the long standoffs not being tied together. will engine torque, and vibration cause the engine to twist on the mount? this will cause throttle position problems and cowl misalignment, and cause the exhaust to touch the cowl, melting it. give me your thoughts on this issue. maybe it's not even a problem. It just looks to unstable to me. Imao.

Gary webb

Default RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly Thread

hi gary.

i don't think it will be an issue at all. roger has put 7" standoffs on a 240cc motor with no issues, so i don't think that these will be an issue. the standoffs from DA are i think 2.25 or 2.5" long. i even ordered these standoffs with a 1" diameter "foot" to go against the firewall. ive seen guys make standoffs of over 3" out of 1" diameter circles cut out of 1/4" ply and glueing them together to make a ply standoff with a DA 150 on it.

no, i don't have any concerns about the rotation, torque or what have you. the cowl moving, well, i think that is always a possibility. i'll can tell you that the muffler is a very very close fit. THAT may be a problem, and i may grind off a little bit on the muffler box where it comes out of the exhaust port.

BTW, the muffler was run the other day and there was less than a 100 rpm drop vs the stock muffler. that is less than the drop on the Slimline pitts style muffler!! pretty cool!!

i'll keep you posted. and speaking of posts, i put all of my FC Mustang pics on my website FTP server. now i just have to figure out how to get you there.

keep in touch. and i WISH someone would build me a cockpit..i hate the idea of building this aerotech cockpit...im just not that handy.

cheers

joe

That's great Joe, like your panel to. What air fill valve are you using. Is this something BVM makes? Looks better than what I have been using. give us a better photo of it and how you like it.

hi gary:

its a BVM fill/check valve. its purple of course. has a nice threaded fitting and also lets you put one of their BVM attachments to make it easy to fill. i'll take a better pic inside and outside. thanks for your tip on the magnet. works great!!!

now that i have an airbrush, i would have done the painting inside the box differently.

did you paint the inside of the wheel wells?? im wondering if i should paint them as silver is a wrong color i think that zinc chromate green or interior green or maybe even O.D. would work.

what do you think??

now, who's gonna make me a cockpit!!! i'll even ship the Aerotech one that i bought...

cheers

Joe still would like to know if your Keleo exhaust and engine installation set up for installing the propeller directly to the engine or is offset to handle your gear reduction drive?

hi. sorry, i was at work and just got to the boards.

the pics you see here are for a direct drive setup. there are plans to make a different Keleo exhaust fit the reduction drive and the mustang. at least, that is what i plan on.

this is just so i can establish a baseline performance model before i use the reduction drive.

gotta get to sleep, im up at 4am tomorrow to fly to dfw for a 4 hour meeting..ugh, on my day off on top of it!!

cheers

Joe, can you comment on the difference in sound level or tone between the Keleo and the Slimline or the stock muffler?

Thanks, and GREAT job. I'm about to start my TF P-51/DA-50 combo.

Hey Joe, how about the sound level/tone of the scale exhaust? How does it compare with the Slimline for loudness and tone?

Thanks,
Tim

well since i have been sick for the last few days, the idea of going out in the cold to do some testing is not too appealing!!!
but, i will try and make a medium res video (with sound) and let you judge for yourself. my guess is its going to be LOUD!!!!

hope that helps..

cheers

AGGGHHH!
I have been watching this post for a while quietly but now I need help. I am starting my P-51 ARF and I decided to go with the O.S. BGX-1. I saw the post regarding the scale exhaust and fell in love, I e-mail the manufacturer and to my dimay found that they make the exhaust for just about everything but the O.S. Does anyone out there know if I can use the MOKI or MDS exhaust and modify it to fit the BGX-1 I have to have this exhaust it is just too cool! Also can I get the part number of the Forward retracting tail wheel assembly from spring air from the gentleman that posted and said that was the one he was using. (pics would be great too if it is possible) Great thread Guys you are helping more than you know.

Thanks
Darrell

Joe, no don't go out into the cold, I had just thought you said you ran it a couple weeks ago, and that it was 100 rpm or so down on the slimline. Figured you could compare the sound whether it was louder or not. I'm getting one regardless, it just looks too cool.

Thanks

Darrell, I always use silver solder on any control rods. First the wire must be absolutely clean. I clean with acetone or lacquer thinner first then sand the wire with 400 grit to clean off any oxides and clean again with thinner. Put a little flux on the wire and slide the clevis back and forth a couple of times to get some flux on the inside of it also. Now with a butane torch heat the wire and clevis going back and forth from the clevis to the wire When warmed up a bit hold the flame on the clevis and feed the solder from the joint between the wire and clevis. The heat on the clevis will suck the solder through the joint. If you get things too hot it will turn black and the solder will not flow. If that happens its time to start all over again. The secret to a good solder joint is cleaning everything thoroughly and the right amount of heat.

Thanks,

It sounds like I'm getting things to hot!!

I'll try again armed with your advice.

Darrell

P.S. When you trim the wing faring for the front of the wing, does the flat white part on the front get cut away, or do you leave it and glue it to the flat part under the dowels?

thanks,

On the Pitts style muffler that DA sells, i noticed about 200-300 RPM drop vs the stock muffler. much quieter, but a little down on power. i did not do a same day, side by side comparison so i will not say that for sure, this is what you would get, but it was what i remember i got.

as for new scale muffler, i don't know if Kelvin posted it on his website, but i heard that it only had a 100 RPM drop from the stock muffler, which is awesome indeed!!!

i'm feeling better, but not quite up to going out in the cold to test. sorry guys. and sorry kelvin.

more later
