The Ys 110 flies it perfectly. plenty of power and it is mostly inside the cowl.

I would put a VVCR 20 or if you want blazing speed, a DLE35

Wow Chad awesome job

Wow Chad that's awesome...what a great help! I'll be starting when I finish the flooring downstairs, any construction and info tips will help, I plan on building an "A", "B" and "D" version @ the same time, like an assembly line. I had to re-ink my plans first, and get my stuff together. I have 2 new Moki 2.1's and a slightly used Moki 1.8 I plan on mixing my own fuel for the recommended 0% nitro 20/80 FAI fuel (pure castor oil)...unless someone has had better luck on stock fuel.

She was a Top Flite ARC with a ZDZ 80,glassed,and painted. I've had over 50 P-51's in my 38 years in the hobby. I'm the ugly one in the middle. Mostly doing the jet thing now. My next Mustang will be a Comp-arf with a Kolm inline.

I am planning on building a red box TopFlite "B" model. Not having totally enclosed an engine before, I am wondering about proper cooling/airflow over the engine. I know there will be a small opening below the prop, but what do you do for additional/adequate cooling? I plan on using either an OS Max FP40 or a K&B .61 with a Pitts muffler. Any suggestions for this are appreciated. Thanks!

I have seen folks make (or is it in the kit instructions?) a removable lower cowl and put lots and lots of rearward facing drill holes in it to let out the hot air. I have also seen folks build a tunnel to the rear of the cooling radiator and have its flap open.

On my Ziroli B style Mustang I have the dummy exhaust stacks open plus a opening around the pitts style wrap around muffler. The opening is on the bottom haven't flown it yet so I can't say how the cooling will be. But with the front opening and the side opening next to the muffler I do not for see any problems. I did not want to open the side of the cowl but had no choise. Hope to find out this year how she will fly. John T.

Happy to help if I can Graham. Email address below if you want to contact me directly when you get started. The Mustang is somewhat deceptive in that it looks like a relatively simple airplane until you try and build a truly scale one! The Platt airplane is not an easy build but the finished product is worth the effort. The biggest piece of advice I would probably offer would be NOT to build the wing the way Platt recommends you build it! He would have you build the wing in one piece and has you sheet the bottom surfaces without any sort of a jig. I was not comfortable with either of those. I redesigned the wing slightly to accept a dihedral brace which allowed me to joing the two wing panels after both of them were completely finished. I also created a saddle to cradle the wing panels while I sheeted the bottom surfaces to ensure that no warps were introduced. The saddle was also designed to keep the trailing edge perfectly straight during the sheeting process. Due to the slight under camber of the wing and the extremely sharp trailing edge it is very easy to end up with a t.e. that looks more like a banana than a Mustang wing! I did very much the same as you, set up assembly line style and built two complete airframes as well as a third wing for a customer who had already built his own fuse and tail feathers. By the time I got to the third wing I had pretty well worked out all the kinks and it might have been one of the nicest wings I ever built!

Regards,
Chad Veich

I think if you pick a number between 80-100 you will be safe.

Chad

I will contact you when I do get started, in re-inking the plans I realized too the very subtile changes in the airfoil....even in areas I though were completely flat!!! A jig, more than just the single jig strip and 1 1/4" stand-offs he recommends tacking under the wing... It would be nice if some more guys would see the shear beauty of the Platt and pick up the torch! I built a .60 size Royal spitfire when I was 16...and THAT wing presenting the same "type" of problems in keeping a true-scale airfoil, this one elliptical, true...especially when looking down the trailing edge!

Worked on my wing a few days ago. Have to figure out the door link geometry so they open and close fully, then I will be able to finish the wing after 2 years.

I recently acquired a partially built Top Flite Gold Edition P-51 kit (65-inch) from a friend who can't finish it. The manual calls for a .91 - 120 4-stroke and I was wondering if anyone has built one of these kits and powered it with the .91. This will be a "tribute" airplane and will remain a sport scale rather than a full blown scale attempt and as such will not likely see a lot of airtime. However when I do fly it I want at least moderate performance. Thoughts/experience!!

I will look forward to hearing from you Graham. I too would enjoy seeing more build threads for Platt designs and hope you will put up a thread when you get started. I am particularly fond of the Allison powered Mustang variants and have yet to see anybody build that version from Platt's drawings so yours will be the first.

Havent done a lot since last april when I tore the meniscus in my left knee. Couldn't climb the attic stairs in my garage to get to my build room for over 6 months. Slowly getting back at it. Healing process is really slow at 63.
