Hi Grahm,
I've built three Dave Platt Mustang wings for customers, two B's and a D, and would be glad to help with questions if I can. I have quite a few construction photos if I can find them! Here are some pics of a Platt B model I built up to the point of primer. It was then sold and the new owner finished it as seen in the last picture.
Wow Chad awesome job

Wow Chad that's awesome...what a great help! I'll be starting when I finish the flooring downstairs, any construction and info tips will help, I plan on building an "A", "B" and "D" version @ the same time, like an assembly line. I had to re-ink my plans first, and get my stuff together. I have 2 new Moki 2.1's and a slightly used Moki 1.8 I plan on mixing my own fuel for the recommended 0% nitro 20/80 FAI fuel (pure castor oil)...unless someone has had better luck on stock fuel.

I am planning on building a red box TopFlite "B" model. Not having totally enclosed an engine before, I am wondering about proper cooling/airflow over the engine. I know there will be a small opening below the prop, but what do you do for additional/adequate cooling? I plan on using either an OS Max FP40 or a K&B .61 with a Pitts muffler. Any suggestions for this are appreciated. Thanks!

On my Ziroli B style Mustang I have the dummy exhaust stacks open plus a opening around the pitts style wrap around muffler. The opening is on the bottom haven't flown it yet so I can't say how the cooling will be. But with the front opening and the side opening next to the muffler I do not for see any problems. I did not want to open the side of the cowl but had no choise. Hope to find out this year how she will fly. John T.

I will contact you when I do get started, in re-inking the plans I realized too the very subtile changes in the airfoil....even in areas I though were completely flat!!! A jig, more than just the single jig strip and 1 1/4" stand-offs he recommends tacking under the wing... It would be nice if some more guys would see the shear beauty of the Platt and pick up the torch! I built a .60 size Royal spitfire when I was 16...and THAT wing presenting the same "type" of problems in keeping a true-scale airfoil, this one elliptical, true...especially when looking down the trailing edge!

I recently acquired a partially built Top Flite Gold Edition P-51 kit (65-inch) from a friend who can't finish it. The manual calls for a .91 - 120 4-stroke and I was wondering if anyone has built one of these kits and powered it with the .91. This will be a "tribute" airplane and will remain a sport scale rather than a full blown scale attempt and as such will not likely see a lot of airtime. However when I do fly it I want at least moderate performance. Thoughts/experience!!

I will take pics tomorrow of the hinge technique and post. Dave was also puzzled by the inner door mechanism on his prints as well. Videos of the Masters when that P-51 came out, Dave had no inner doors on the mains and no doors on the tail wheel. Mr Scale ??? So he did not follow his own print. Try the KISS principle. Keep It Simple Stupid. He scored his points in static display, his flying was some of the worst. Dave was a re-kitter. Nice scale design in shape, but not a flyer.

Havent done a lot since last april when I tore the meniscus in my left knee. Couldn't climb the attic stairs in my garage to get to my build room for over 6 months. Slowly getting back at it. Healing process is really slow at 63.
