I believe Sierra makes cylinders that will fit. If you want to convert them to electric, send them to Down and Locked. They are not cheap, but they work great and the customer service is tops!

OK, back on post #119 I was #58, typo said "nustang1971" but I am pretty sure that it meant to say "Mustang1971"...

I don't really care what # I am but apparently my number is not 58 any longer ;-)

Any idea what number I am? Anyone?

Thanks-
Sean

PS - waiting on my 2014 AMA card but here is how my # has read for over a decade.....MUSTANG

Yes I have the DLE 55 Rear Exhaust installed in my TF P-51. It is a nice fit. You do need to cut a little out for the front of the cylinder-head and spark plug boot. DLE stock rear exhaust muffler fits inside the cowling. I'll take a couple pictures and post them. Maybe tomorrow, since I am snowed in for a couple days. 12" snow along with 25-30 MPH winds and getting down to -15 degrees tonight and tomorrow night. High tomorrow is -8 degrees You would think I live in Alaska.

I also have several pictures of the canopy install. I'll post a few of them also. I glued and faired the canopy to the fuse rather than using screws like Top Flite suggest. Just don't like the looks of those large screws holding the canopy on.

HAHA, yeah I killed a few names, dup'd some, and flat out counted wrong. Lesson learned, NEVER post a list in a hurry! Tried to revise, and correct my incorrect posting with a corrected version in the form of the attachment on post 129, but as this isn't my thread, and a bunch of numbers changed....I'm leaving it there

On a separate note, I didn't see a P-38 brotherhood thread, so I started one. P-38 Has always been another on my favorites, getting a larger one has been a long time coming!

Robart made gear for the Byron for some time. They are no longer listed on the website, but you could give them a call. There were a couple different cylinders Byron used, is yours a one piece wing, or plug in? If I remember correctly, my one piece plane had composite (plastic) cylinders and where spring air type (I might be wrong on that) , the plug in wing version has brass cylinders

I started working on mine again last night now that I have the gear door hinges. Got both the wheel doors mounted, and they swing perfectly, but it messed up all the geometry of the links that open and closed them, so starting from scratch again on those. Going to use ball links this time around, the Z bends were too big and sloppy and caused binding. Had I not gotten glue on one of the springs, I could have used a cable system instead. The configuration uses 2 bell cranks that connect to the doors, then a shared link to a retract servo. It worked good before, but now they either fully open, or fully close, but dont fully open and close. The hard part is the link between the servo and bell cranks.

Good morning my brothers.

Anyone running an electric set-up in a top-flite giant? What motor, esc, and batts are you running?

Sorry, I don't recall.

You mentioned the P-38 and that rips open a crusty scab. I have one of those imported electrics with retracts and all. It had a problem I finally determined what not enough throw on the nose gear which allowed it to collapse on landing. When that happened the prop tips went into the dirt. I have had new props on back order from HK for almost 2 years now. The plane is hanging in the shop in almost perfect condition except the props are wasted.

I used to get folks to come out and watch it fly.

I may be opening a can of worms here...

I'm thinking of changing the graphics on my AW P-51. The tail is blue checkered and the unit markings are PE and I want to change it to HO. Then and give it a personal touch on the nose art and remove 'Excalibur". It would not be scale or realistic and I couldn't match it historically.

Thoughts?

Jack

Gixxerjack, do it! When I am finished with my AW rebuild, mine will be Petie 3rd. There are plenty of blue nose schemes to choose from.

It's built into the trailing edge, cutout, trimmed and capped...tapering to almost a knife point...the original instructions from Dave P. the plans, and the lazer cut ribs in the kit don't jive... Provisional # 60....
Info on the Dave Platt P-51 question: Dave leaves info off his prints so you would need to purchase his finishing videos. The way I get around it is by getting that info off Brian Taylor plans, and most recently Chad Veich plans. Both have excellent detail there. Doesn't matter what model the detail is the same. Hope this helps.
FYI - I am currently building a Platt P-51B .

Which P-38?
HK is tough, they were selling the J Power one...lots of places to get props for that one

It will be a custom scheme and the plane will be named Christine...Not too sure my wife will appreciate the unit designation of the 487th FS (HO) though....

Thanks...I'll look into it....did you build the wing yet??? ...also are you using the plan's bellcrank system for the ailerons or double servos, same for the ruder and elevator... installed pushrods or cable pull-pull... I was thinking nyrods...or similar system

Just my opinion, but I would shy away from nyrods on the ailerons. I did that in the past and never had a problem, but a servo on each aileron with short, clean linkage is so much better....IMO
