Thanks for welcome guys.

I placed an order for the ZP G62. I'm use to EI from my DA-100 and DA-50'a I had on the Cardens I've built.

I'm thinking luck may have been on my side. I dropped the retracts in for an almost perfect fit. The only trimming I had to do was at the spar for the scissors. They drop dead nuts center of the wheel wells. I pray the rest of the install gos like this. Fingers crossed.

Steve that is good to hear now with the gear extended see ware the axal is it should be right at the L/E. If not just trim the rails so they angle fwd a bit, had to on mine and cut the little pin the come out of the ball at the upper joint to clear the upper sheeting.

It's hard to say. Maybe lean them a bit?

Steve
If you do shave the rails a bit be sure you have the wheels on so they stay below the door surface when retracted and don't forget about the nut. don't ask why I make these comments

yeah, im already looking at that. My wheels just shipped today, so a couple more days there. I gave up on the thought of trying to save money and using the ABS cowl. It would look like poop and with all the money already put into this bird, whats a few more hours at work? LOL. Im not sure how much ill actually be able to lean them. The nut looks like its already right at the height of the doors. Im working on getting the hinge notches made and fitting the wheel well skins that i made up. Also been working on the cockpit a bit for a change of pace. Ive got most of the plumbing done for the air system and servo extensions made and routed so it wont be long before i can close up the bottom of the wing. That reminds me, i still need to order more West Systems.Seems every day im dropping a few hundred on this guy. Ive made a point NOT to keep track though. Id probably have a stroke. LOL.

Steve I found that problem on the beams when I built my first one what you can do at this point add a piece about half of a beam to the bottom of the current beams (epoxy and a 1/8 dowel pin each end) then you can lower the mounting surface with a bit of tapper 1/8 at the aft end and 3/16 at the fwd end. That is what I did to mine, plus moving the gear fwd as far as it would go

Hope this helps

Also post some pic's as you go and extra set of eyes can't help

Well, if I run into problems later I can cross that bridge. For now, I was pretty happy with the fit so I went ahead and mounted the retracts with 8/32 blind nuts and SHCS, and I also closed up the bottom of the wing. The gear door lay ups are currently drying. Back to work on the fuse for now. The wheels and tail wheel unit will be here tomorrow. I have to order more gear door hinges as my LHS only had two sets. Will post pics soon. BTW, I left off the aft most piece of sheeting so I could get the flaps working first.

Hey Bob, did you do a sliding canopy? If so, do you have any pics of the install? I'm looking for different options for making the canopy frame as well as the sliding mechanism. I keep coming back to making a plug of the canopy, and using that to lay up fiberglass for the frame that will get glued into the canopy. Then I can also use it to try and pull a new canopy. Of course I'd have to build the vac table first, but that seems like the easy part. I've been researching it enough, so I may give it a shot.

Steve,
What are you using for hinges for the gear doors? I used du-bro 1/4 scale nylon they work pretty good.

An update on my corsair. I've had the last week off from work, which is good and bad. Good because I got to put in a lot of hours on the Corsair. It's finally starting to take shape. Here's what I got; the wing is sheeted and mounted to the fuse and gear doors are laid up. A rough out line was drawn on, but won't get cut until the bottom of the wing is opened up. My order from Robart with the wheels and tail wheel unit will be here today, so I can open the wing then. The H stab is mounted to the fuse with two 6/32 SHCS and blind nuts, yet to be epoxied. The CF pushrods for the elevators are installed and connected at the rear, yet to be finalized at the servo. The air system is mostly plumbed, and the fuel system is plumbed and awaiting fuel. The access hatch is laid up and filled and primed and the switches , air fill port and gauge are mounted. For now it's hinged with small nylon pin hinges. Not sure if that's permanent or not. I think that's about it for now. Bob, you got me thinking again, damn you. LOL. Just kidding. I will have a second look at the gear once it's opened back up and see if I can rake them forward any more. It will certainly help with the ground handling as well as appearance. Ok, so now for a question. Do you think a DA 50R would fly this bird? The reason I ask is that I have one sitting on the shelf, and my hobby account is now empty. Before recently, I didn't think I stood a chance at finishing her up before our warbird event, but now I'm thinking differently. While the DA is scheduled for service in another plane, if it would fly the corsair for now,......just a thought. What do you think? George, I'm using the ridiculously overpriced Robart offset hinges, and probably a piano hinge for the tailwheel doors.

I should probably add that I plan to do the maiden flight once it's in primer. Then, if all goes well, she'll get a paint job and what ever detail will be going on. As much as I'd love to be DONE with it for our warbird event, I ain't superman. Lol.

Fed Ex arrived. The tail wheel unit was a snap to install. Cut and dry. As for the wheels, well, let's just say my jaw is hurting from hitting the floor. I can't believe that for that price, you only get one. You gotta be kidding me. $75 A PIECE! Cmon. I mean, there absolutely beautiful, and feel like the top most quality and all, but I wouldn't have bought them if I knew that. My bad. Anyway, enough complaining. The fuse is almost ready to close up. All the radio gear is installed and linkages hooked up. The last couple of items left on the fuse is to make a battery tray and the sliding canopy. She's getting there.

Guys,
I'm just about to start construction of my wing. I've noticed posts about having to shape to retract mounting rails to get enough tilt and yet still remain lower than the wing skin when folded. Should I do anything different with the rails while I'm building instead of dealing with this after the fact?

thanks

Hi Steve

You never get used to the shock about $$$ in this hobby, so best I can say is welcome to warbirds
Now about the DA-50 it will fly it how good ? a lot depends on the weight if you are under 25 mhop is it would be great if is over 30 Good but most likely not a lot of vertical, beyond that I don't have an clue.. Our club is small and we only have one member the is flying DA's and all of his birds are arf's at about 18 lbs

The pic's look great and from what I can see it looks straight.

Just don't forget to punch the rudder and elevators full of holes to get rid of as much weight in the tail as possible each once in the tail means 6 less in the nose.

One more thing if you are going to soft mount the engine per the plan, make the mount plate from 7/16 cold roll steel as it will be about 2 lbs and will save a lot of griet, also if you are planning on mounting the cowl per plan then you want to keep it as lite as possible.

Thanks for your input Bob. It's always appreciated. Your probably right about the DA. I suppose if I don't have a suitable engine for it by the warbird event, it will just be a static display. If it's even at that point by then. I tend to build a little on the heavy side, although I'm trying to get away from that, so I doubt it will be under 30 lbs.didnt quite think it would be enough, but hoping it was.

I thought I might share with you guys a great source for learning how to do a lot of the scale stuff that we all want on our warbirds. Many of you may already know of him from RCSB as Drice. If you search on YouTube for Don Rice, he has over 100 videos of him scaling out a ziroli Corsair. Some of what he does is a bit out of my league, but most of it is simple once you see it done. Just thought I'd share that.

Well, it took me a good 12 or 13 hours today, but I got all three retracts working flawlessly. A big sigh of relief. All I kept thinking was if I screwed up the gear rails or not. I've had problems in the past with gluing in the gear rails without the gear bolted to them. I guess I lucked out. I also got all of the control surfaces on the fuse working properly and the radio somewhat programmed. If only I had two wheels. Lol. I guess now it's on to building the ailerons and flaps.

I always love to set it on its own legs for the first time. Bob, does the gear angle look right to you?

From Robart. That's what I did. I put one of yours on the other side. Is that right? $75 a wheel? Or did Robart screw up and only sends one? It's hard to tell from there web site.
