RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Cliff, way to go!! can you post a finnished pic of your plane I've searched back in the thread but cant find a finished picture, what engine did you go with? Who's Next??
Well I've been hard at it the last week or so, I've started painting, it's really coming alive now, I spent about two hours mixing paint until I finally came up with the colour I wanted, in the end it was worth it I really like the tone
I'm trying to finish it in the next month as I am moving and want to have it all done by then.
here's some pics

no they are not . the fasteners are cout down slotted head screws ca"d into drilled holes. Functional not needed and my wt is a 25.6 with the wing fold mechanism

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I ask on here several pages ago where it should balance and I believe it was rt3232 that told me I can't rember exactly where it was for sure now. I took off and learned you need a good bit of runwayto take off. It flew kinda funny until I got the wheels up then it was sweet. I did not need any trim at all. I did a roll and a couple of high speed passes. You need speed when you land, no three point landings with this plane. It needs to roll out. I have a G62 in mine and added nose weight, the whole plane without fuel weigh 27 lbs. I had a guy video the flight, he got the whole thing except the landing. I will see if I can load it on here. I must admit I was very nervous on the landing and it did bounce a lot, but all of that was completely my fault for trying to go too slow and do a 3 point landing.

cliff you got it down in one piece.be happy i also have a g-62 and will be a little heavier than you by a couple lbs. Remeber these fly well up to 32-24 lbs but you are correct they need power on landings. Did you use full flap and what diam and prop pitch. thanks for the compliments I was a award winning plastic scale modeler before getting into rc 20 yrs ago. Be surprised what you can do. Ive got wingspan nav lights and needed white leds. I went to 7-11 and bough a led light. i wired it into the system and it works great.
we are all waiting on that vid. hey lets all move to michigan so we can start a club where everyone gets aalong unlike most threads this on hasnt a bad word in it
regards tim

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I took mine out to fly a couple of weeks ago and had lots of troubles with the flaps. I have the siliconed up now. They do not move. I used silicone in case I ever get back into the wing to try to re-do the hinges, I can just pull it off. As fast as it comes down without flaps I could not imagine using them. I used a Top Flite 22 X 6-10 prop. I believe I added about 2 lbs. of lead in the nose.

CLIFF...THANKS FOR THE VIDEO ....everything looked good except for the bounce which put you back in to the air at a stall...and that put a damper on the landing..just prior to that it looked good....we need more videos like this we can see what to expect....RCPILOT78

Cliff another thanks for the vido, looks great except for the bounce, had the same experiance with my first corsair but I was luckyer no damage on my bird. I found that one click of power nearly eliminated te flair bounce thing,
Good luch on your next outing

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
rt3232..when you say just one click of power to solve the landing problem did that mean ( one click more power ) or ( one click less power ) ..until we fly the bird and get the freel for the air speed it will be trial and error...hopefully not too much ERROR.. looks like I will Maiden tomorrow morning or is it ( mourning ) need all the info I can get my hands on for the first flight thanks RCPILOT78

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
RCPILOT78,
I'm not Bob T, but I'll offer a couple of thoughts that are applicable if you've not flown gassers before?
Unlike glow powered stuff which is almost invariably a lighter wing loading, when you cut the throttle on the little gas engines that big 'ol prop out front acts like an airbrake to some extent, just like full scale stuff does. So you either need to carry a bit of power on your approach, or add a blip or two of throttle as it settles toward the runway.
Power off, or not enough approach power for the particular wing loading, i.e. the Corsair, and it gets to where it's starting to flair and you run out of elevator. Then it drops and you get the bounce. A quick blip of throttle will usually restore elevator authority enough to continue to pull the nose up, or stop it from dropping which ever you need.
Carrying extra power down final works, but you have a higher approach speed and have to watch for ballooning at inopportune times as well as taking more runway. That's where the flaps come in nice, it will allow you to slow the airplane down more, a shorter steeper approach while carrying some throttle to maintain the effectiveness of the tailfeathers.
This "blip the throttle" approach thing is common among the GS IMAC guys and it is the way I usually land my gassers. It just takes a bit of practice for them, but with the wing loading your Corsair will have (about 50% higher than an IMAC bird) you may want to just do the little extra throttle all the way down if you've got enough runway?
I'd definitely suggest you do some slow flight practice up high if you don't already have that on the flightplan.
GOOD LUCK! [8D]
