just as soon as the paint dries and I can handle it. The top of wing is done in base colors
now to do the fun stuff, but I was told to wait a day or two for the paint to gas out.

Question; Did the corsair use the short/fat external tanks (155gal?) like the mustangs used? I have two Aerotech P-51 tanks laying around. I've seen pix with a short/fat tank just not sure they were the same.
Hey Duber, I had thought about using the Warbirdcolors paint also. How does it hold up to ware and tear?
Thanks
Kelly

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
The gas doesn't seems to affect the paint, I try break cleaner once for remove some oil on the fuse
and my white towel came a little little bit blue ( of couse the plane is blue )
I uses a air brush for painting the plane and
for cleaning the air brush I uses water only and it was very easy to clean
overall i'm very satisfied

Hi guys
I am a ways from paint so starting to look at options and thanks for the info on the war bird colors paint. We have a fellow in a near by club that outhers say he has used them all, so I have made a date to go to his shop and have a look, so we will see.
Kelly
I am not sure about the tanks, as I recall most of the tanks would fit any bird durring wwII I will try to find a web site that listed the tanks and the birds they would fit.

Drumroll Please,
My scale exhaust has arrived. I'll post some more pix when I get it set on the plane, and then a video when I do a test run of the engine on a stand. Kelvin at www.keleo-creations.com has done it again! The stacks are different lengths to accomodate the right thrust.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Guys, Thanks for the kind words, it's all Kelvin's doing. He is a real craftsman. I paid for the exhaust about a year and a half ago, and then paid an additional amount to cover Kelvin shipping the motor and exhaust back to me. The total was $240. The exhaust was built specifically to my mockup, and when it arrived one set of stacks was set into the fuse about 1/2 inch, the other was perfectly flush. Kelvin talked me through the fix, and now both sides are flush. I now suspect that perhaps UPS dropped the box and it happened to land on that stack, bending it a bit. Or, I screwed up the mockup. Either is possible.
The exhaust has a good sized manifold, with the two bolts fixing it to the engine. Kelvin added a cross piece that is bolted to the aluminum engine mount (he tapped two holes in it). I think the photos show it fairly well. I hogged out a LOT, maybe too much, balsa as I was fitting them, but I plan to smooth out the area under the pipes and line it with aluminum pop can material as a heat shield. I'll likewise fashion an aluminum cover like the real plane has. I think it will l look good when its done. I will post pictures of the install. I will mount the motor and exhaust on a test stand in the next few days and run it. I"ll post a link to a video of the engine running.
Kelvin is re-vamping his web site, and due to some difficult dealings with some customers, he's stopped doing custom work so he can work on building up a stock of his regular sellers such as the Top Flite mustang, etc. . I suspect that if he had multiple requests for this setup he would make them, but it might be awhile. Obviously I can't speak for Kelvin, but he knows I'm posting pix and talking about it on this thread. If you want one, I'd suggest emailing or calling him.
I can hardly wait to make some more progress on this bird!

When I built the fuse I planned on being able to do the taper just aft of the cowl line, so I basically added balsa wood all the way around the engine box to the skin. So I have almost a solid balsa plane around the engine box, which gives me a good foundation for shaping/filling those gawd-awful voids. What I basically plan on doing is to mix up a thick slurry of expoxy and microballoons and work it into the balsa to make a firm foundation. Then I'll use some "Blaze Glaze" auto body filler to make the void closer in tolerance. It is ready for sanding in about ten minutes and is very easy to sand. I'll get the shape of the fuse in the area of the exhaust very close with that, and then use aluminum from pop cans to line the fuse for heat shielding and then fashion a cover for the forward part of the exhaust. I've attached a pic of what I'm hoping to replicate.

Sound's like a plan to me, will be vary intersting to watch, and like allways new things make me ask questinos, [&o]So have you checked the ballance with the new exhaust yet?? and if you are going to have to add weight up front why not add some lead shot to the first coat mix of slurry fill, just a thought[]
Anyway nice work

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hey Sam, Kelvin does do beautifull work. I had his P-51 exhausts. They fit and worked perfect, how ever I did sell them and still have the Mustang. They where a little to restrictive for me to get the power I needed to do 130mph. I also changed the engine out too. ZDZ-50-NG to a G-62.
I'm NOT being critical of his work. It just wasn't what I needed anymore.
That's why I built my own exhaust this time, because #1 Kelvin isn't and #2 I wanted the most power I can get out of the engine.
I'm one of those guys that fly my warbirds at un-scale speeds. Besides this corsair has to keep up with a T/F Thunderbolt/3W-75 and two other Mustangs/ G-62. Yes, we all fly together, once with disasterous results. But man, the crowd loved it.
Later,
Kelly

Kelvin's work on my 1/8 scale exhaust. I made the hatch on the bottom in case I need to replace the holes. I'm still waiting on the header. I changed from a Magnum 1.20 to a Saito Golden Knight 1.25. The threads are different and the exit for the exhaust is different so he is comming up with something new.

That's a great idea to do a lead shot slurry. I'm sure I'll need the nose weight anyway. I've test fit some aluminum behind the pipes and I think it's going to be easier than I thought.

Here are some other pics of various stages, these are a couple weeks old.
The dummy engine in these pix is for test fits only. I'm going to get one that's not made of plastic.
I know F/G Specialties has a fiberglass one and Frank Tiano has one made of exopy glass. Any of you guys have a prefrence?

Hey Thunderbolt47,
I can't speak to the one by FS but I got mine from Frank Tiano and I think mine is great. You can't go wrong with Frank's dummy radial, it's very detailed.

Hi Thunderbolt47
Looked at F/G/S dummy last year at Toledo and it looked veary well made and would have had one but allready had the plastic's I did find that the plastic's will hold up if you back fill them with expanding foam.
Your bird looks like you are doing a great job. nice pic's
