Gents,
Thanks for the help, that all makes sense. I'm going to continue working on it. Next is to add some down elevator with the flaps then slowly add some more nose weight but I HATE ADDING WEIGHT TO AIRPLANES!!! I have the battery as far forward as I can get it and it is still in the fuse. Next could be moving it to the inside of the cowl up against the dummy radial.

Cut 1.5 to 2 rings off those stiff Robart strut springs. You will notice the difference when taxiing and landing. Kevin.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Todd, took me several flights to be able to land with no bouncing. Part of it was getting off the elevator right at or just before touchdown so the tail could stay in the air. The moment you force the tail down she wants to start flying again. I was used to extras and edges that at touch down I would pull heavy on the up to stall it in. Just doesnt work on the Corsair.
I had to have a seasoned Corsair pilot stand behind me for a couple of fights to remind me to let go of the elevator. The other most noticeable thing I can mention is too slow on touch down also causes mine to bounce, other words dropping it in heavy.
I also balanced mine right on the CG so what the others say about adding nose weight makes sense. I started out nose heavy and after 3 or 4 flights removed the extra weight. I didnt like the way the plane handled in turns and inverted or on slow rolls.
Best advice I can give is let that tail fly on the roll out forcing it down at the last minute to gain ground control with the tail wheel.
Gary

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Gary, thanks for the advice, I've been flying with a seasoned Corsair/warbird pilot. He's landed several times and had some trouble with the bouncing too. We'll keep woring on it, lots of good suggestions here, keep them coming. It has gotten better since I added 6 ounces to the nose. Again, it kills me to do that, but if that's what it needs so be it. I agree with you on the extra/edge planes where the plane will slow and the wing will stall when you pull up ele.. The wing on the Corsair just doesn't seem to want to stall. As my friend keeps telling me "fly it to the ground".
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

I am assembling a KMP Corsair and have been watching this thread for idea's for some time.
Awesome work all of you. I wish I could build.
I found this last night while doing research on the Corsair. Thought you guys might get a chuckle out of it.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
you guys are right on all counts to avoid the bounce....I have over 55 flights on mine and the suggestions you quote are all good....My Corsair is nose heavy GREAT for partial power decents very predictible and stable.....however keep the power in until just before touch down..and yes get off the elevator when the mains touch down.....in otherwords fly it all the way to the ground holding some power in... I did not have to remove any spring coils in my retracts....I do get a slight hop occasionaly on landing ...but that is because I get sloppy with throttle management and elevator control......have not experienced the BOUNCE though ...the plane very stable on landing as long as you master..(air speed ) (throttle control ) and ( elevator input )...If done right the Topflite Corsair can be GREASED IN...practically every time....

Here's a few pix of the equipment install on my Corsair. I like to double bunk my equipment, especially if it means I can move stuff further forward. After I get the access hatch done I'll post some pix of the top of the plane.

Hi Sam
Have you tried to get a balance to C/G yet? way back in the thread I posted some pic's of what I did and a lot depends on what engins you use, but with my G-62 dry mine balanced right on the book C/G so I moved it fwd about 3/8 wihich required 16 oz in the chin behind the firewall and just fwd ot the wing, just used #6 led shot and epoxy, after flying it a bit if I had to do it again I would only go for 1/4. when you roll it over it tuck the nose al little, but this did away with the snap tendency just befor tuch down.
Hope this helps
Cheers Bob T

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob. I have not tried a CG test yet. I'm going to finalize the equipment hatch in the nose, and then finish up routing the retract lines and mounting the air valve and servo. Then I've got to attach the strut covers and make sure the doors are working right. I might be able to check CG in a day or two. My G-62 has the Keleo exhaust, but I also poured some epoxy/lead shot slurry into the nose while I was modifying it so that the fuselage curves in behind the cowl flaps. I'll probably try a maiden flight without a cockpit or pilot figure- both of which will be behind the CG a bit. I'll also wait on panel lines and rivets until the maiden is done. I'm kinda hoping that I did not put in too much lead now! The cowl with the radial engine up front seems to weigh a fair bit too.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for letting me benefit from your experience.

It took 1lb 12 oz. on the front of mine to put the CG where Bob's is, and that's with a nice heavy Sachs with a magneto on it and an inverted pitts muffler. I have a little over a pound attached to the firewall former in former boxes of lite ply with 1/64" sides so that the edges of the box conform to the shape of the former (round). You should be in good shape doing that so far Sam.

Great to hear Bob. I'm hoping, that once airborne and the bugs worked out, my Corsair will be a regular flyer! I do hope somebody got some pix of your plane on a strafing run so we can all see it.

I got a nice pair from www.vaillyaviation.com. They are not true scale but they were pretty reasonably priced.

Well the Grey Corsair is getting a lot of road miles on her. Three weeks ago she went to Warbirds Over The Rockies and today she flew at Bomberfield, the gathering of B-17s. Hope all of you have had a good summer. Mine has been awesome
