RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
Nosen put out P-51D model only as far as I know. My P-51B isbuilt off of my new re-drawn P-51B plans using 3-d drawings and photo refferences, the one I fly now is built with stab which is removable.
As for the repair on the stab, Nosen is built as one piece and glued on to the stab sadle. I have removed stabs and rudders for repair before, I just try to keep the damage to a minimum when removing it,, not a big deal to make the repairs than do a partial resheeting with balsa than gluing the part back on......George.

RE: Nosen P-51 (not). MY OWN GIANT PLAN BUILD
Thank you for this very informative thread. I have a Nosen P51 I am going over that hasn't flown for the last 10 years. Rcwarbirdbuilder, what structural changes to the airframe did you make to handle the power of the 100 cc engine you are using? Also, I have to get a new canopy. Is there a canopy that you prefer over the Nosen canopy? It could be my eyes but the Nosen canopy does not look right to me.
Thanks again

Hi Chevy, one of the mainthings I did to reinforce the front fuselage was to add 1/8" ply from the front spinner former to overlap into the 1/8" ply front wing sadle, than this is covered over with balsa for easy shaping. The last canopy I used was a Don smith P-51 canopy from Precesion kits, it has a nice shape but the lenght in the back needs to be trimed off a litttle since it is to long, but worked out good. The engine of prefference for me is a spring start Quadra 100, they are strong and hastle free and uses no ignition battery.

Thank you for the info. Mine has a Brison 5.8 in it that the previous owner ran on methanol. The plane appears to have been modified similar to your description with the exception that 3/16 ply was used. I will order the Don Smith canopy. I like the way it looks on your plane.
Are you still selling copies of your modified plans? I can see a B version in my hanger in the future.
Thanks again

For those of you flying one of these birds, how much throw on the control surfaces are you using? I have searched the whole site and have not found anything.

Boss - Page two shows the start of cowling in the Quadra 100cc engine, some of the ignition engines have a slightly smaller case and head. It well look nice with a 4 blade prop.
I well reactivate the plans add for you., let me know when if you decide on the build. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8222802/tm.htm ( I tried to put up the url for the expired plans add for you to look overbut it did not work,,, untell I pay for listing and activate the add it comes up as build forum url).

I think I finally got a good video camera, bought a Canon vixia R300, only thing I don't like is that it does not have a view finder, but has good color and great image stabilization at zoom.
My friend Jim R of Flying Pilgrims has got his Nosen (not) flying this summer and that thing screams, I need to get my camera out next time he is flying.

We call this Nosen Resurrection. We fly at 4000' plane weights in at 51 lbs 3 ozs dry. 3W 80 with 25 x 10 prop. Clocked at 100 mph with zero wind. Painted w two stage nason and alsa killer chrome. Plane lands very slowly. We were worried about the weight, but the first takeoff the thing headed skyward like a home sick angel

Here's a pic of my "updated" Mustang.. with all the latest modification incorporated. Mostly, the modifications were focused on the fuse to make it look a bit more scale. Note the tail area specifically, much better than the original, which is way too big.
Of course, the plans have a 3 pc wing and now show retract rails and locations.
The plane is a rock steady flyer, with great aerobatic capability, but easy to land ....
The link for the detailed build thread on this airframe is here:
