RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
Almost finished up with the P-47. Have to add the pilot and seat. I installed spring air retracts, YS 110 with a Graupner 14x7 three blade prop. If I had to do it again, I would use the 85 degree retracts instead of the 90 degree retracts. I had to bend the wire just a bit. I had to add about 4 ounces to the tail for balance. Here are a few pictuires of the plane.

Some pictures of my progress. I'm using Hysol instead of microbaloons, same result but better bondage.
One more thing, I fited the cowl first ( made sure that the engine was centered ) then slide the fake engine inside the cowl then the cowl on the airplane, resecure the cowl from here I moved the fake angine foward, once I was happy with it carefully glued it to the cowl on two spots ( Ca and accelarator through the front ) after I used Hysol to permanentelly secure it. Nice pics, guys.
My computer 'died' about 10 days ago, so this is my 1st oppotunity to log on to RCU in about as many days.
My engine is now broken in: JEEZ that Saito 1.00 is powerful, I'm going to 'limit' it to much less then full power.
The computer problems have prevented me from focussing much attention to my T-Bolt, BUT it is essentially ready to fly now (but not really complteted). I will post pics and specs, and hopefully a flight report in a few days.

Here are my last pictures, all done today around 3:00 am and flown also today around 3:00 pm. She flew flowlessly, smooth like a baby's behind, the engine needed a bit of adjustment, during the first flight she wanted to climb ( just the way i like it ) but after a few pases she was trimed, landings were just a kiss to the runway and the OS 91 pull her just right in avery way, no need for more power here, I'm just happy the way she flew, very rewording after all those hours of work, especially last night workinglate to try to get he ready and I did.

First Flights!
Well I finally got mine airborn today. 3 takeoffs, 2 deadstick landings, and finally: a complete flight.
Deadstick landings were result of engine running too rich. 1st flight was about 1 1/2 miniute. I landed with the gear up (hit wrong switch during last moments), which resulted in damage to the belly pan, rear fuselage exhaust duct, and slight damage to fuselage just aft of cowl.
Since damage was minimal, and did no structual damage: I went for it again. This time, I got about 2 1/2 minutes, and with plenty of altitude and warning: I was able to set up better for a landing. I got the gear down and half flaps, but was still a little 'hot'.
Last flight I finally got the mixture right; Engine ran well for all of 8 miniutes, set up for landing with gear down and full flaps, and greased it in. With engine still running, taxxied back to pits and took it home.
General impressions of flights: needed down trim for level fight (see upside down pic of stab and elevator: that is 'neutral' after trim adjustments).
Weight without fuel: 152.6 oz (9 lbs, 8.6 oz). It was weigh just prior to the flight, with no 'MGs' or gear doors installed yet. The gear doors will add about 1 1/2 oz.? I also have a full pilot which I will add after I repaint him, which will add about another 3 oz. That will still keep the empty weight under 10 lbs. Not bad, considering I have 1400 mAH 5 cell NiMih, dual functional bomb drops, and all three wheels go up. BTW: that battery is shoved as far forward as possible, under the fuel tank.
All pics were taken AFTER the flights, which is why you see the damage on the underside.
My plans are to take this and 2 other warbirds to the Palos R/C Club 'Warbird Day' event ( near Chicago) this coming Sunday (even tho I swore I would never attend that event again).

Got my gear doors mounted using some 3/8" cable clamps from Radio Shack. 6 in a bag for under $3. I'll post pics when I get back from Chicago: going to a warbird event on Sunday, Aug 23.
Also, was able to piece my under belly exhaust thing and pop the belly pan back out, so it looks 'normal' again (well, from a distance anyway).
For info on the warbird event near Chicago, click on this link:

RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
Kurrikan,
How did you finally get those tail wheel doors to work? On a previous Corsair build, I used threaded rods and ball links attached to the tailwheel to open and close the doors. It should work the same for the P47. I was going to put some pics up to show you, but it looks like you solved the problem.

Mounting Gear Doors to 650 series RoboStruts: A Great Alternative!
OK guys, I have 3 flights with the gear doors attached now, and I found a great alternative for the Robart gear door brackets. But rather than post it all here, I decided that this idea could be used on many other warbirds besides the Top Flite P-47,
So,....I started a new thread with details on my gear door attachment procedure (with more pictures):

RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods
There IS a little modification that I did to the gear doors tho, that I didn't mention in earlier posts: I removed some material with a Dremel (with sanding drum) to make tapered channel for the RoboStrut. Doing this allows the gear doors to become flush with the wing when retracted.
Shown is my left dear door removed (so I can paint it olive green), showing the channel.
