Progress has been gradual but is happening; after 3 years the fuz and centre wing is done and wings should be completed in a month, once the lights are in.

I'm planning on a test flight before December and then getting Cobber Kain's 'Paddy III' paint job done in time for the Warbirds Over Awatoto meet in February at Napier, NZ.

Project - constantly changing requirements, over time and over budget - but a lot of fun :-D

Joined the club last week, maidened her and almost turned her to splinters on the first flight. Heavily tail heavy but my builder/test pilot got her down. After proper adjustments she's a beauty in the air.

Why was an expensive warbird flight tested that was "heavily tail heavy?"

All though suspected not confirmed Is that some of the arf manufacturers pin a side view of the fuselage on the wall, then when blindfolded throw a dart to mark the C of G thus tail heavy. A buddies ESM Hawker Typhoon balanced on the shown c of g was almost list on the initial flight, an additional two pounds of lead in the nose was needed for the second flight.

As a rule of thumb, you can always balance between 28 and 32 percent of the chord for test flights.

Because we balanced it according to the directions and only discovered the "heavily" part once airborne. With ESM it's always a crapshoot.

The most we could get into the cowl that I was comfortable with was a DLE-35RA. Good but not great power, looks good in the air but not my fasted Warbird. Used a 19/10 maple prop, works well. Retracts are Sierra Giant (yes, 65% the cost of the ARF) since the ESM version are subject to "self disassembly". Used HD1501 servos all around, metal gears, massive torque and inexpensive. Spitfires are beautiful and I wanted something different. She always get attention at the field.

Here's a couple of shots of my ESM Hurricane which i obtained from a guy who had ripped out the landing gear causing major damage to the wing .
I decided to give her a new lease of life and set about repairing the damage and while doing so i decided to extend the leading edge of the main wing by approx 10mm because to my eyes at least the offering from ESM has to much back sweep giving it a slightly odd look, but it is only my opinion, it also entailed making completely new wingtips from solid balsa
The wing was then recovered in Sig Koverall ,the fuselage was rubbed down and the whole plane was repainted in RAF SEAC Command squadron markings.
She is based on the Hurricane which the BBMF operate in the UK .
She is powered by a DLE 35RA turning a 19 x 10 prop, it has the ESM air retracts which hold pressure just fine and as i use these units on my La7 with no issues and they came with the plane, i decided to use them to save some cash.
It has the cockpit modification from Ty's planes and she requires a pilot from Warbird pilots plus some minor finishing like fitting the cannon and painting them black plus painting the gear doors, but apart from that she is ready for some engine runs

Dave - your Hurricane repaint looks marverlous, did you strip or sand off the paint off the fuselage?

I just sanded it back, the fuse is quite thin so it was only roughened to take the new paint.
After than i masked the whole thing mid grey as per the underside, then i sprayed the upper surfaces brown then masked up the camo and sprayed the green.
I used 3mm car tape to get the shapes then followed the edge with 6mm tape and paper to mask everything correctly.
The white was done last, decals are accurate in size to the real thing and were made at a local sign writers

I've seen several ESM Hurricanes with rivets applied. Are folks using pre cut vinyl rivets. If so from where. ?

On her 6th flight the servo arm for the elevator broke. Able to get her down but had an argument with a barbed wire fence post that cost me a wing, she'll fly again. Been using HD 1501-MG servos for YEARS in my warbirds but just ran into a batch with brittle arms. Upgrading to heavy duty arms.

I think your quote by Christopher Plummer is cool but I think he said "You know what to do with the lame ducks Sargent ". No big deal, part of the accuracy thing in being a scaler in me !!!

Hello been some time since I had posted anything on my build, actually did not do anything for a while, life things etc.
I have installed the DLE35RA and because it is roughly 1/4 inch longer than the cowl I added a 1/4 balsa spacer You can see the filler I used to fill in the open space and blend it in. I also didn't want those screw heads sticking out so I glued in a bulkhead inside the cowl so to mount it from the inside.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!! I am trying to figure out how to rig up the choke for the DLE 35RA and just can't seem to think of a way to do it. Can anyone show me some pics of how they did theirs ? I really could use some help on this one !!!

Hi, I gone to this simple method on my DLE equipped warbirds. I put a ball link on the carb choke arm, a plastic push rod connects to the ball link and the push rod exits on the side of the fuselage. the end of the plastic pushrod has a 2-56 rod at the end, a small L bend gives some thing for your fingers to grab.

Pull out for full choke - push in for no choke, just the choke on my dad's 1951 chev truck.

So it sticks out of the fuselage a bit, so do my charge switches, fuel dot and retract air fill fitting.
The Hurri is upside down as it hanging from my garage ceiling, the Hurri is a bit ratty as it crashed (a flap failure - roll to crash) on it's maiden flight - I patched it up and it flies.

Thanks, I did do something similar but I came out the bottom of the fuselage with a wire rod connected to an aileron bellcrank and using Golden Rod from the bellcrank to a balljoint on the engine. Using Golden Rod for the throttle also but hooked from a balljoint to the servo.

I finally got it painted next step it to clear coat it then hook up the controls. Masks for markings I got from a friend Chuck Hamilton, the stencils are form Callie Graphics. All this is done in Latex type paint, very easy to work with. I chose this scheme as, if and when I get my Hurricane that I can get in and fly done, will have the same scheme.
