ORIGINAL: Spychalla Aircraft

I finished the mount design for the Sierra Giant Scale ESM Hawker Hurricane Gear today. The modification is not that bad. I plan on making a reto-fit kit with parts and a detailed step-by-step instruction with pictures. It starts with slicing the sheeting and pulling the rear mount out with a pliers. A new mount is marked for T-nuts and epoxied in place. Once mounted this gear is much different from the ESM gear in that it will rotate so the wheel is flat to the bottom of the wing when retracted and then rotated to the proper straight position when extended. Leo
This aircraft is going to be my winter build and I plan to use the Sierra retracts. Was the mod kit and instructions ever made available? If so, where do I go to buy?

Also, I plan to use an OS200 4-stroke. Has anyone else done that and have they any advice to offer?

Many thanks,

Ron.

Ron,

I never got the Sierra retract mod kit. I didn't need it. My Sierra retract dropped in and work fine...... You are going to love this plane.

Thanks Paul! That is really good to know.

As an ex-pat Brit (I originate from Scotland) I have always wanted a Hurricane so I am really looking forward to this one.

Also - I love your Russian paint scheme, super job there!

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread - it is really helpful.

Ron, I never did finish that gear mount kit. Life got in the way and the hobby had to take a back seat for a while. It is amazing to see that I have not worked on this airplane project for nearly 2 years now. Time flies. It is going to be another year or so before I get settled down and working on airplanes in a serious way again. So your on your own with that gear. I do think you will need to make a new back mount for clearance, but it is a fairly easy project. Enjoy your Hurricane! Leo Spychalla

Quick question here, I just got this kit with a Satio 1.8 FS. Should I go with High Torque servos for the control surfaces?

Hi again, does anyone have Ty's cockpit in the aircraft and have pictures of how the reworked the servo trays to make new ones? I cant seem to figure out where to make the new servo trays to make it work. If you have pictures that would be fantastic!

Ty usually does a video for the install. Try doing a search for it on youtube.

Best of luck

I saw the video, I understand that part, you need to remove a good chunk of the servo trays so that the cockpit has room, and then you need to rebuild the trays, so my question is does anyone have pictures of their rebuilt servo trays?

Here's the pictures of what I have done, & also one of the reason why I have to cut my mates lawns for free !!.
I have filled his spare room with planes when I ran out of room at home[X(].
If posible I would mount them forward of the CG, however with the Hurricanes big wing the extra weight up front to balance hasn't been an issue.

What is the black carbon fiber rod /arrow shaft in the 3rd picture that goes from the inside top to inside botom of the plane?

PS- Funny that it looks the pilots boots stabilize the fuel tank

Ha!, See what you mean about the boots .
The carbon fibre rod is the antenna, I have a hole drilled at the top then the wooden antenna I made up has the rod passing through it with a peice of dowl in the bottom of the tube, I then have a small ply brace on the bottom skin with a small hole through it & the glass fuse, a single screw locks the rod into place & holds the antenna in, this way I can remove the antenna if required ( they are always getting caught on things arn't they).
You can see the antenna on the Hurricane in the picture of the room.

Excellent idea...I was contemplating simply leaving mine off, but that's a brilliant and simple solution for the antenea mast.

I am starting to put the wings together, and I noticed that along with the wing joiner they provide, they provide the wooden dowels. Did anyone beef these up to something a bit thicker or just kept them as they are?

The dowels are there strictly for alignment.

Cheers,

I think the DLE 35RA will be a perfect fit in this plane. I have one in an RC Guys Super Decathlon so far so good.

I think it will be more than enough to haul the plane around. I think my Saito Fg 30 with 16x8 is a good choice and I expect the DLE 35 to be more powerfull?
