I also have my engine mounted. I am using an Eflight 110 nad I may change out of an Eflite 160. Still deciding. Anyway i made a wood standof and it turned out pretty good.

Well I started working on the hinges for the alierons and flaps. I am truly amazed. I would have hated to be the guy jiging up this wing and making all of these slots. All the hinges fit perfectly into the wing and then into the control surfaces. You had to make each hinge. the hinge floats on a piece of threaded brass. I did have to drill the holes in each hinge to accept the brass tube but that was easy. I differed from the manual i made each hinge and then inserted them into the wing and made sure they were all the same depth. Before I inserted them into the wing i took a dremel tool and roughed up the end to let the glue get a better grip... Once the hinge was in place i took thin CA and wicked a good amount in around the base of each side of the hinge and then hit it with a little kicker. those will never come out. Once all the hinges were in the wing I then glued the control surfaces in...It was easy but took a little time.
I could just imagine trying to build this thing from scratch....anyway here are the pic's...

I have not forgotten the Storch. I have been doing a little work at the time. I have evrything hinged and i was able to install the struts onto the wing. It was all pretty stright forward. Getting ready to install the tail wheel so I can start putting servos in place....

I've been following this thread for some time and think the ESM Storch is a beautiful airplane. I know it has been discontinued but does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Any help would be appreciated.

firstly, see how they ' tuned ' the motor.. laughable, shouldn't have used it that way. secondly, its way to tail
heavy. a novice pilot would have picked up on that... nevermind an 'experienced' pilot. thatStorch was almost
doomed from the getgo.

I have flown an Esm Storch this weekend, and have some mixed feelings about it[] It's heavy (9Kg) and the landindgear is very soft. When the plane rolls you will get a toe out, and it needs a lot of speed to lift. It's a handful in the air, but lovely to land [I don't feel it so Storchish in the air.[]

I watched the video and would have to agree with Expert. Looks very tail heavy. When it goes into one of its first turn it almost stands vertically on it's nose.

The plane flies great with one major mod, the slats in their stock position are too far forward of the wing leading edge and as such will act as "turbulators" in essence destroying the lift of the main wing. However if you reduce the distance between the WLE and slat TE by half of the stock position the plane flies beautifully. I must stress though that the CG is absolutely wrong on the plans and you should err on the side of being nose heavy. I flew mine on a SAITO 1.80 with a Higley Heavy hub installed and the flight battery as far forward as you can get it and I still had to add several ounces of sheet lead to get the CG right.

It is a little heavy, so it cannot land as slow as the real one ( size-wise) but if CG is correct, you can fly it;

I did get mine to fly fairly well and then sold it. It did not fly like I felt a Storch should fly. STOL characteristics were non existent. The plane required a great deal fine tuning to the leading edge slats and modification the landing gear to just get normal flight out of it . even after alot of work to lighten the plane it still was about 4 lbs heavier than it should have been . The Idea of a Storch appealed to me as I have built a couple of the Dennis Bryant 1/6 scale Storchs but this plane can not be compared to the Dennis Bryant (which does actually fly like a Storch should). The best input I could give anyone trying to improve this plane is to strip it and lighten it anywhere you can safely remove weight . Take your time setting the LE slats , they will help if set right and hurt if set wrong. You should have about a 1/2 to 9/16 " gap between the slat LE and wing leading edge with about an 3/16 gap between the trailing edge of the slat and the wing and the leading edge lower lip of the slat should be about an 1/8 " above the lower lip of the wing leading edge . also set about 4 degrees washout at the wing tips.

Thanks for the input, I agree the ESM ARF is overbuilt and does feel heavier than it should. Do you remember the final weight of your Storch and did you add balast?
My plan is to move servos and everything I can forward of the CG and avoid adding dead weight at all cost. If still heavy I will take off balsa sheeting aft of the CG

Re. slats as you see in my build I copy the Svenson and Severin plans for correct dimensions and offset (I don't have the Bryant plans)

If my memory serves me correctly I think it weighed a little over 14 .5 pounds. I know that I had to add some ballast but not as much a some I have read about probably 5 or 6 oz. . I did move the engine as far forward as the mounts and the cowl would allow. This reduce the need for ballast dramatically and improved tracking on the ground and in the air. I also did quite a bit of work on programming of the flaps and ailerons for a crow function which further improved flight characteristics

Under 15 lbs is my target weight, seems possible with servos forward and an MVVS 26 for power.

Thanks for the useful info about the crow mix, did you have that on all the time or only activating with flaps down?

I usually activated crow when flying slower , flaps were activated seperatelly from crow and usually only on landing approach
