I cut my tubes so they are just inside the lip of the hole. The force of the exhaust expels the oil past the fuse. There is hardly anything on the fuse bottom after several flights. Cooling has not been an issue with that big opening on the back of the cowl. DA 50

Mine has a DA 60 in it, this is how I ended up making mine work. I ducted the air back to the cylinder while closing in the intake, and cut some vents in the bottom. I was able to lean the engine down and it stays cool.

Nice set up, others have posted and have not opened their cowls up other than for the Exhaust Tubes, I think I will try it as I had planned and if over heating becomes an issue I can always open the cowl up later like you have done; I appreciate you going to the trouble of posting your photos, it has given me some ideas for any future project or alteration to my P-40; I bet that DA60 makes your bird smoke!

Thanks.

It is pretty darn fast now. I figured out that the cowl would build up pressure inside when it got up to speed, this would keep the diaphram pump from working properly and would lean the engine out. It wasn't really a cooling problem, more of a pressure problem with more air coming in than what could get out. Works like a charm now! The DLE's may not be having any problems. I know another guy on here running a DA 60 had the same problem, but fixed it a different way. He ran a tube from the carb vent hole into the fuse where the pressure wasn't an issue.

I see that some of you are swinging the Mej 22x12 3bl with DLE 55?
What speed are you getting with that combo? Did you have to add any nose weight?
I have a ZDZ 80 that I'm wondering if I can squeeze into this airframe.

I am ready for my first flights. They will be without the cowl on my DA-60. I plan and putting a flat plate through the cowl with everything below the bottom of the cly on one side and the cly and muffler on the (hot side) other. From what I have read on this thread it sounds like the carb is getting fooled by the high pressure inside the cowl so it will be seperate from the Hot side of the engine by a baffle . I have the exhaust tubes just about 1/8" proud of the cowl.
I have the CG set per the instructions (5.5" back from the LE at the fuse) were are you guys flying your CG at ?
I have a Menz "S" 22x10 woody
Any other ideas or suggestions?

I was installing my retracts today (Robart #150 as recommended) and found that I had to add a 1/8" shim to the bottom of the landing gear blocks to allow the retracts to fold flat. Has anyone else had to do this?

Yes mine could use the 1/8 shim as well. I just cut a little out were the scissors link hit the wang.

Have been getting some stick time on my P 40.
I am now getting comfortable on flying and landing.

This past weekend I changed out props from a XOAR 23/8 to a 20/8*14 TopFlight

This was from a fellow club member who has been flying a TF P 51 that has had a radar gun on it at 105mph.

I NEVER thought I would say I fly with Zinger Props, however we flew in formation and he had to back off his throttle three clicks so I could keep up with.

As of now I am sold on this combo.

Take off and landings are a little different, SLOWER on take off, but faster on LANDINGS.

At least that is how it felt and looked.

I now look forward to flying this plane.

Also have TF 22/6*10 I might try as the P 51 owner has had good results on that prop too.

This is with a G62 with Bennent muffler - 32:1 oil mix.

Am about ready to test fly mine and was wondering if any of you mixed down elevator with the flap deployment? If so, about how much throw?

Thanks in advance.

The flaps don't affect my elevation at all. I have no mix in mine at all. Some planes may act differently, so I would try it without any mix, then add some if you need it.

Just an Update...
I am still waiting for my first flight . The weather here in the Midwest has been so hot I just don't feel like going out in 100 degree weather to have fun. I will update you when I do and maybe some pictures. I don't anticipate any issues with the plane but you never know.

Ditto on the hot weather. No pleasure in it when it's 105.

Hate to say I dinged mine two weeks ago flying in 20mph winds....Id call that pilot error in itself, but shes all patched up and ready to go good as new I love this plane so much I bought a second one during the gold member discounts and plan on stripping glassing and painting it.

I also did not need any trim changes with flaps. This has to be one of my best flying planes - you'll love it. A little tricky ground handling though. Watch out for cross winds. Good luck on your flight.
