I have a couple of flights on mine with an EDF dynamax. It flys great. There are pitch changes with throttle but it is manageable. It does struggle to get the nose up on a full throttle go around but in the circuit it is easy to fly. Mine is really squirrely on the ground but I think I just have too much expo. By the time any correction is apparent I am already over correcting. Also it really doesn't want to rotate without flaps on takeoff. Mine is close to 20lbs with the batteries and the CJM gear is struggling with the weight in the upper flanges. Might switch the mains out to Robart 630 and reuse the CJM struts. I do need to replumb the whole plane as there are many leaks in the gear door cylinders and the tee connections.

Hey guy's

i know i'm diggin up a bit of an old thread and I don't know how many people are still around other than invermast, but i recently acquired a set of mold for the He-162!

The molds are 1800mm long or about 71" long so very close to 1/5 scale. i was actually hoping that they might have been some CJM knock off's so I could easily get my hands on a canopy, wings, and all the other missing pieces but no cigar!

By the good fortune of this forum I've come across the original maker of these molds who made them from blown up 3-views over 20 years ago!

I have pretty quickly punched out a fuse using one layer of glass to see the shape and although the fuse in this form was way to flimsy to even pick up, I has given me the chance to see the shape. overall, it's not too bad. I will overlay my 3-views over it in the coming days to see how close it is, and then I start designing a wing.

As the glass only was too weak I have decided to lay some carbon into the mold and it has stiffened it up really nicely. I've only done one side of the mold so far, but I will lay the carbon into the other side tonight and then tomorrow I might join the two halfs to see how well the molds align. I have already got the material other than the resin at home and I plan to lay up another fuse with a lighter weight glass and then carbon in one hit so it should come out just as strong, but lighter! I'm thinking the prototype will be EDF powered to limit the $$$$ risk before I then make next one turbine powered!

I found this video a while ago from an actual He-162 pilot that after the war immigrated to the US and then served in Korea. Bit slow to start but a fascinating watch.

Got the other side of the mold done in carbon. And my test nuke arrived! A starmax he-162. Just have to balance up the fan, final setup, and it will be ready to go!

You might want to jump on it pretty quickly mate. Starmax has gone out of business! I had been doing the same thing as you, but once I heard that, I jumped in and ordered it before HK ran out of them.

I balanced up the fan the best I could do with that motor, and other than final CoG, It's ready for a maiden as soon as the wind dies down for a change.

Mean while the salamander halves are joined together and just waiting for that to dry as I type.

A note on the Starmax 162, if the ESC is still located in the fuse, as mine was, you will want to get it some cooling air before you try and fly. I got about 2 minutes before mine got hot enough to shut the fan down. IMHO, not the best flying foam jet out there, but no real nasty habits I saw.

Yeah I have heard this, so I made a cooling outlet hole in the back of the model to let the hot air out...

The salamander fuse is out of the mold. I will clean the molds up, and lay up another one all in one hit this time so it should come out with far less bubbles in the layup and should also be lighter with the material I have to use this time.

As Thomas said. I got the fuse to to the "I'm sick of sanding this one" stage and haven't gone further.

Cant decide if I should fix what I don't like about the fuse and make new molds ( the original molds are pretty average at best) or just built and fly the current fuse. It's come out a fair bit heavier than what I would have liked.

Yes it's true that it is an interesting project, I just keep getting side tracked on other things.

just last weekend I was at a jet event where 3 people had asked me how it was going and threats that if I didn't get any work done on it soon they were coming over and taking it away

will get there here I hope!

Well I decided to join the fun and bought a CJM kit off RCU from another member and he was nice enough to sell it with out the gear. I am going to go with a turbine and I am really surprised with the wing area based on some of the previous posts by CJM rep. I added 2.5" to each wing root and in the current state it has about 781 sq in. I only used the area of the wing by itself and not full wingspan since it is a shoulder wing with no real lifting body. Maybe my figures are way off but I used the stock kit wing cores and as you can see from the pics I will have to adjust the wing saddle to accommodate the increase of wing size. Should be an interesting project that ends with 1) a decent flyable airplane 2) a really hard to fly airplane 3) a smoking hole in the ground. These kits seem to sit in shops for a bit then get passed on, so I will give it a home for awhile. This one had a little bit of work done and seems to be a little older, but no matter I plan to scrap most of the kit supplied parts and do my own thing.
