Hey Ram-bro,
According to the pilot of the P-38L (last ship in line with an X on the nose), that aircraft is "the only flying P38 (of 7)with functioning turbo-chargers". I talked to the pilot following one of his flights at the Offutt AFB Airshow 28-29 August, Omaha, Nebraska. I was very curious because when the aircraft taxied by and during the solo fly-bys during the Warbirds demo, I heard absolutely no hint of a turbine whine from the aircraft. I was actually stunned at how quiet the aircraft was; it sounded more like a smooth running B-25 than any Mustang, with none of the crackling rumble of a P-40 (also with Allison power). My great expectations of the wonderful turbine hum that I expected from the sound track of the WWII movie "A Guy Named Joe" never were realized. I was truly disappointed the real deal didn't sound as cool as the P38Fs that were the stars of the movie. If any of you have the chance, I highly recommend getting a copy of the movie; easily the best footage of real P38s that I have ever seen. The movie was also the story line that was updated into the modern movie "Always".
I've always been a BIG fan of P38s, so much so I'vejust completed a nice Robart P38 (old kit). I had to have those BIG three-bladers so I installed a pair of DA85s for power. After I get some more twin time logged, I hope to flyher nextSummer.

Here are a few more shots. Word on the street is that the PoF airplane, 23 Skidoo, had to divert to an alternate airport on the way to Sacramento and is down with a cracked engine block. I'm glad we decided to stop at Chino instead of going all the way to Sacramento!

Just got back from the Sacramento Airshow at Mather. One of my best friends owns a house that parallels the runway, so the pictures I took are from about a mile away, but at least I got some shots of them in the air:

They ended the show with the "Heritage Flight" with an F-22.
They are going to Reno Air Races later this week. I have Pit Passes so I should get even better shots, next Sunday.

ONE OF THE GREATEST AIRPLANES EVER BUILT. I COULD NOT BELEAVE IT WHEN BOB HOVER SOLD HIS P-38 [ WHITE LIGHTING ] AND BOUGHT A P-51 AND A FEW YEARS BACK AT THE TILLAMOOK AIR MUSEUM IN TILLAMOOK OR. A DOCTOR HAD BOUGHT ONE AND BEFORE HE EVEN GOT TO FLY IT THE MACHANIC AND SALES PERSON TOOK IT UP FOR A JOY RIDE. THEY WERE ON FINAL BASE AND RAN OUT OF GAS... LANDED ABOUT 300 YARDS SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AND LANDED IN THE BUSHES AND TREES.. I WAS THERE.. JUST THOUGHT I SHARE THIS WITH YOU GUYS..
