Wow that some nice work on the exhausts ... How does it affect performance. They seem simpler than Kaleo Exhausts.

Agreed, If you want to set speed records do not you 4 blades. If you want "scale" performance nothing beats the look of a 4 blade.

Hey guys im a Toolmaker by trade, my American friends may not know but thats a precision machinist of plastic injection and press and shear tooling.

I know making this stuff isnt for everyone but I established the taste for having a plane that's a little different. I started making the exhausts when i had a certain existing brand fail twice in 20 flights, I dont talk about it now as old mate doesn't like you expressing a truthful opinion.

Anyway I have learnt much about making a scale exhaust over many exhausts for example brass gives a distinctive sound and it is also available in thin wall sections. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to know that a inside diameter of 8.7mm flows more than 6.35mm ever will.

My Spitfire exhaust picked up 1300 rpm over the commercially available brand and it kept it up 60 flights and counting. Also worth noting if you go out of you way to split those pipes right off the head and make them deliberately different lengths(2.5-3") you get the most wonderful sounding models. There is not a single time ive flown my single cylinder spitfire without a stranger telling me how much they enjoyed watching it and then refusing to believe its only a single cylinder, the difference in pipe lengths gets you a difference in exit time for the exhaust shock wave and at high rpm you'll swear shes got at least 3 or 4 cylinders. My Saito 115 Spitfire pulls 10100 rpm on the ground and was clocked @196kph on gps with a scale exhaust.

My P40b was clocked @ 210.3kph on gps with a scale exhaust, that equates to rpm thats just crazy and try not to think about it !

My thoughts are a big diameter quality made scale exhaust with every inside obstruction addressed will flow more gas due to its exhaust stacks facing backwards in air travelling at over 160kph.

Its important to leave those stacks cut square, cutting them level with the outside of the plane will cost you performance.

Today was the day RC peoples, after 600 hours of dedication, frustration and hard work she flew.

With a scale cloud of white smoke the radial in The Dixieland Darling slowly came to life as cylinders come on line.

Take off needed only half throttle and a 5 or so clicks in Ailerons and 4 clicks in elevator to trim her out.*

She's an animal in the air with sweetest exhaust note that could only be described as a blend of growl and straight cut gear whine that justifies the cost of the engine.

She recorded 170.3 kph @ 60% throttle, it seriously shifts.

I could quite happily just taxi the Dixieland Darling without needing to fly it, its just awesome.

Congrats! Guess you were a bit nervous on the first flight?

Thanks guys it was great to let her loose but i was so temped to ground her just the same, im sure you know what i mean as we build em to fly but can loose em so easy.

I was incredibly nervous but i spoke with all my peers with these type of aircraft just to ensure my plans were solid. A nice long take off with the first turn as flat as possible.

Its funny how 11.4 kg of plane accelerates, it looks big and slow but lifts off the strip all the same. Once the flaps were up and wheels were up I dialed in some trim and opened her up and it was clear it was running out of fuel in the top end so i pulled her back to 50% and man did stretch its legs!!!

The guys at the flight line were all going "oh wow" when as i pulled her in for money shot low pass. I have never seen a prop driven warbird pack the pace on the way it does, shes awesome.

we opened up the top end screw 1 full turn as it loves the fuel and flight # 2 dialed in 170 kph at 60 %.

She drinks 450cc of 15% nitro in 4:30 minutes so i guess its a 6 minute plane.

Next to install is a 5 cylinder ignition kit i have here, still running glow fuel but with less consumption.

Yes HD it was but when that dam Saito FG33R3 let me down for the fifth deadstick in a row and destroyed my wings i was loosing hope.

There was 60 hours combined to fix my landing gear and wings plus the change over to the 5 cylinder but man im glad now.

i used these guys, they can do vinyl or a water slide which is thinner, i used water slide.
Also the did both a left and right and scaled them perfectly for me, i cant praise pinups plus enough, they are the best.
