RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Got mine today. Scared me when I seen a two foot slice down one side of the box that went into the kit and it looked as if someone sat on it. Kit was fine with a little cosmetic damage on the fuse, about ten minutes of work.
Thinking of a saito 180. Any opinions? |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
A 180 will be fine. However, at our altitude, you may find it a little slow or you'll have to settle for a smaller prop to get adequate speed. My KMP ME-109 has a 180 in it and its spinning a 16x8 2 blade at 8300(motor still is not broken in). It flies well, but isnt all that fast.
If your looking for good prices on either the 180 or the 220, come up to greeley and get it from Things with Wings. This place normally sells motors of this size for at least $50-100 less then Horizon lists them for. They sell almost everything in the store for about 10-15% less then any Hobbytown, Colpar, or whathave you. In either case, whether you put the 180 or 220, you can easily have the plane built, test flown, and ready for Warbirds over the Rockies at the end of Sept. Hope to see you there....with or without your new ME-109 :) |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
I fly a number of CMP planes with an O.S. 120 AX and have had excellent results with all of them. I've used it on the Hellcat and Spitfire (both around 12 pounds) and also the Zero (around 13 pounds) with power to spare. Mind you, I'm not doing aerobatics beyond loops, rolls, split-s' and the like, but I really like the dependability and ease of the O.S. and it flies them well. I plan to use it in my new 109 when it's finished! ;)

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
anyone thought of going gas like an evo 26 cc?
http://www.wyliewarbirds.com/project...9e/kmp109e.htm I know this is a kmp 109 but that motor would work in this cmp |

All this talk of glow and gas motors....well....how bout this?!?! :)
The portion of the mount sticking below the cowl line will be cut off of course. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Kahlog,
Which Turnigy is that? and how many cell are you going to run on it? BTW I'm putting a Saito FG-36 gasser in mine (haven't started it yet, and wont get to it till start of Oct![&o]) Still waiting to chase up retracts too. Cheers, Paul. |

kahloq
Thanks for the info. I'm deciding to go with the 220. Yes, Things with wings is a great and has the best deals but I end up burning in gas to get there what I would have saved in buying from them. DOes the 220 have the same foot print as the 180. |

Hope these pics help with your measurements. For the outside side shots, the top of the groove the for exhaust stacks is also where the bottom of the engine mount is.
ORIGINAL: Sturtz Would one of you guys with the ARF in hand take an accurate measurement of the cowl ? Needing to know what can or cannot be stuffed in there without chopping too much. Thanks in advance !!:) |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Spring Air has a set #709 priced quite reasonably priced ($130us) including shipping. The retract angle is (74degrees).
web site is, www.retracts.com. They can furnished either drilled for struts or 3/16" wire. |

This motor can spin a 22x11 prop on 10s-12s, so Ill first try something like an 18x12 if it'll leave clearance, if not, I have some 16x14's. BQuartucy, as far as retracts, the deployment angle is not the issue...... The Spring Air at 74 degrees is the strut angle towards the ground relative to the wing. The real plane was 82. But, the real problem is, the gear rails in the wing do not line up with the strut channel in the wing perpendicularly. There is a 3-5 degree forward rake for the strut channel in the wing to the wheel well so normal retracts(of any angle) wont simply drop in unless you use wire struts and bend them. I am sure some of the major retract makers are looking at the plane now and trying to come up with a solution. |

As bad as i hate to admit this electric is the way the hobby is headed.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Saito takes power-to-weight superiority to new heights with the FA-220–its biggest single-cylinder ever. Packing a whopping 2.2 cubic inches into a 1.80-size case, the FA-220 will give medium to large-scale aerobats like Hangar 9's 27% Extra 260 out-of-sight unlimited performance.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Specs on Horizon:
saito 180: Mounting Dimensions:138 x 69 x 135 mm saito 220: Mounting Dimensions:194 x 75 x 158 mm I have both motors, 180 in KMP ME-109 and the 220 in H9 1.50 P-51. I can tell you for a fact the 220 is bigger which agrees with the mounting specs given by Horizon. The 220 may be "packed" into a 1.80 size case, but the prop shaft is longer, the mounting flanges are wider, the mount holes a spaced a bit farther apart, the cylinder head is higher etc. Hopefully the mounting dimesnions above will give you the info you need in order to determine if it will fit in the plane. here's another option, thouhg more expensive. Saito 200TI twin inline mounting dimensions: 160 x 110 x 142mm Length wise its right in the middle of the 180 and 220. Width wise, its wider, but there's plenty of space this way in the CMP 109 http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...odID=SAIE200TI |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
after looking at the measurements provided in the pics above, there is 209mm length inside the cowl area and 139mm width, so any of the three motors should fit fine...aka:
saito 180 saito 200TI saito 220 |

Thank You Oosiksmith !! Even better than plain old measurements.:D

kahloq,
Thanks again. |
RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Thanks rcfighterjock. I'm encouraged now to start off with the OS 120 AX in the CMPro 109.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Well i have an OS 120, brand new, I will used that and see how it work out.

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
kahloq ,
Do you have the Sierra gear in your KMP ME109? How hard do you think it woud be to modify the CMP to fit these gear. I'm thinking of moving the gear in to a more scale location. |

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Hi all
I dug up some Century jet retract that drop right into the two LG rails. Unfortunately the rails are held in place by balsa and a very light and short ply doublers. Anyone who has scratch built models of this size knows that this set up is too light for such a large model. I guess I'll need to beef it up. Steve |

Over my dead body. Anything over .60's and you are paying an arm and a leg. Going electric in a large scale bird, you may as well go turbine cause you are dropping a heck of a lot of dosh on it.
Get me the electrics needed to power my: Meister Fw 190 D9 Ziroli Stuka Romain Research MiG-3 and then remember my Zenoah G62's cost me around $400, and the GT-80 under $700 brand new. And with each I can fly till my batteries in the radio go dead. Can't do that with Electrics. |

Evil-Merlin, You would be amazed how easily these conversion can be done, and even more to the point..how CHEAP!! The same setup being used in the RCGroup thread can be done for WELL UNDER $400!! I always have a spare set of batteries as well and can fly fo 15- 20 min each(and could use the same batteries in all those models you mentioned), and charge one as I am flying the other...no mess, no trouble starting, just plug in and fly:) and NEVER have to say " DEADSTICK LANDING" again!!!!;) Electrics....ya either love 'em or hate 'em, but there are a lot of good points to consider on the Sparkies side.....GAS...er..well they sound good[:o] LOL Oh and for the record I am putting a gas motor in my 109.;) Cheers, Paul. |
