Question: What warbird do I describe?

Clues:
  1. This aircraft unfortunately came along toward the end of its war; and was therefore immediately an unneeded aircraft.
  2. It was, however, an excellent aircraft.
  3. The first prototype flew before war’s end, but couldn’t make the required ceiling.
  4. The second prototype had a larger wingspan, and was able to make the required altitude.
  5. But by then, the war was over.
  6. Still, it was put into production and proved to be a capable performer; both as a military aircraft and in civilian hands.
  7. It was the fastest military aircraft of its time.
  8. Initial deliveries of the aircraft were slow in coming; mainly because the war was over and no one was in all that much of a rush.
  9. By the time it was being delivered, the war had been over for several years.
  10. Fortunately, it was, for the time, a popular export aircraft.
  11. License built versions were built.
  12. Racing versions were developed and were successful.
  13. It was a single seat fighter aircraft.

Not a Macchi; but this may help. Thanks; Ernie P.

  14. It was a tractor biplane.
  15. It served in combat.
  16. It had ailerons on the lower wing only.
  17. Some of the racing versions were built with a reduced wingspan.
  18. It was used by more than a half dozen different countries’ militaries; in addition to the racing versions.
  19. The racing versions won some pretty prestigious events.
  20. One racing version reached nearly 200 MPH.
  21. It was an equal span biplane.
  22. It was used, and was successful, as a fighter.
  23. It was used, and was successful, as a bomber.
  24. It was used, and was successful, as a racer.
  25. It was used, and was successful, as a float plane.
  26. It was copied and used, and was successful, in another country’s military.
  27. There was a tendency to enter a spin rather easily.
  28. It was noted for having a very powerful engine.
  29. The prototype had ailerons on both the upper and lower wings.
