Alright guys, over the winter this forum became a little dry and some of the posts heated.
Time for some fun and knowledge. How it works: First question – How many blades had an F6F-5 Hellcat Propeller (for an example) – Then it’s your turn to answer. Then who ever asked the question name the next guy who asks the next question – and so forth. Rules: Only warbird related questions model or full scale. Two part questions are allowed. The time limit between announced winner and your question is 24hrs Rule change Feb 26 2010 Alright here is my question: Question #1 What is that and for what is it for? |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
It looks like a vacuum generator for vacuum powered flight instruments. Just my guess.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Sorry nope

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
G-Pete,
It's a Flash surpressor for either a machine gun or cannon. Primarily used on night fighters, RAF Lanc gunners had them on their browning 303 machine guns to prevent blindness when firing the guns. |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Is it from a planes engine or fueling system?
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
It's a blast tube for the nose of a P-38M night fighter.
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Its a flash supressor for a .50 Cal Machine gun

G-Pete,
Thanks, I have a good one. 1. Name this engine 2. Name an aircraft that had this engine installed in |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Looks to be an Allison V-1710 used in such airplanes as the P-38, P-40 and others
Dave |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Dave,
You are correct on both counts, the other aircraft were the P-51A and P-39. You get to ask the next question. |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
THIS IS AN Allison V-1710-89/91 TO 12 cz. for P-38 P-39 P-40 AND P-63K

Name this engine and at least one aircraft it powered.
Hint: it wasn't a P-51 |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Dave,
You gave away the engine, it's a BMW-801 which went into the best German fighter the FW-190. The engine also went into different junkers aircraft to include Messerschmitt, Dornier, and Heinkle aircraft. |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Good one Brad, your next.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

Take the bull by the horns, your answer is correct; please sir, the next question is yours. |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
What member from a famous family was killed arming a radio controled B-17 during WWII
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Joe Kennedy
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
I always thought it was an RC B-24 he was killed in. I guess I will have to up-date my brain on that one.
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Ampeater I guess your up. Think up a good one Stuka Jon

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
What special bomb was invented in the middle of 1943 to take out German dams, and what plane was used to deliver them?
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
I believe it was the Upkeep "bouncing" bomb delivered by the Lancaster bomber.
Dave |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
(ex USAAF B-24J 42-110007) The single US Navy BQ-8 detonated prematurely over the Blyth Estuary, England, killing Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. and Lt. Wilford J. Willy. See.. I thought it was a B-24.
Upkeep bouncing bomb, known by the manufacturers as Vickers Type 464, and I think it was dropped from a Avro Lancaster. |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Both right. But it looks like Jeff had to correct the last answer, so who goes next? Jeff or Dave, whoever gets here first ask the next one.
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
I bow to your great wisdom Oh mighty one. My humble apology. Stuka Jon

The Westland Whirlwind was a British escort fighter. By the way since I have already answered three questions correctly I'm done after this one.
1. Has this aircraft been made into a RC model? 2. Provide a reference for the rest of us. |

Brad, yes it has been made into an RC model and I have been lucky enough to have been its (this ones) only pilot.
Built from plans by mate Barry who loves this AC and got the plans from the UK. He extended the wings by 6" and it flys beautifully. I dont think it is avaliable in a kit though. I would say not. Cheers, Brad |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Brad, very good, the Whirlwind is one of those rarely modeled aircraft. There are two gentalmen working on a 1/5 scale Westland Whirlwind on RC scale builder here's the link http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...683&PN=1&TPN=1 you will need to create an account, but no worries it's free to view the build thread. Vance has already built one Westland Whirlwind 1/7 scale with 76" wingspan.
I bow to the man from down under, Brad the next question is your's |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Thanks mate, and yes I have seen that build a couple of times on that other site. ( I am a member):)
Ok, to keep things rolling right along here,,,, being Spitfire mad it has to be a question on them. So, which earlier marque Spitfire was used as the basis for the prototype Mk XIV airframe? I hope that is in line with the idea of the thread. I'll be back on tomorrow to see if (how many) anyone got it. Cheers and thanks for a great thread. Brad |
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Not a big Spit expert ,but I think it was a Mk. VB
|
RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Sorry stang, not the MkV, although this basic airframe/fuselage did grow into some later marques.
Cheers, Brad |
