Phil:
Hadn't commented on it before, but I think it's a shame when your transmitter costs ten times what the plane does.
Haw.

But it's the only one I have!!!!
Well, no, take that back. I do keep a Futaba 6XAS around as backup and for park flying with my Shock-Flyer.

Hi Dick,
Do you have a CAD system on your computer?
I do all my designs on CAD anymore, it helps me a lot

I do-- but DUH, sure don't know how to use it. am still of the old ruler/compass school. at almost 80 yrears young, its rough to comprehend this new stuff. beginning to figure out photo attachments. besides if I did use one, I still couldn't print it on the desk top printer. also believe my eraser is quick enough. thanks anyhow. dick

My first design of my own, but needs to be refined. For a start fuse is to big so will use smaller fuel tank and reduce the fuse by 3/4" to make it more stream lined. I call it simple jet.

Here is a different way to scratch build. I started with a large foam block and some CAD DWG's that a friend and myself made. I plotted out the top and sideview, then made templates to hotwire the foam, then did all of the contouring by hand.
This will be a plug that I will pull a mold off of and then layup the actual plane.

I have using foam as a plug for awhile, I then laminated balsa strips. 1st layer length wise, then next 2 layers at 45 degrees and final length wise. its strong and smooth. almost any contour can be fabricated this way. the attached is an original 81" design by a friend and it sure flys good. dick

With four layers you could probably use 1/32", 4lb contest balsa up to 35%.
Wow, great idea!!!

to be honest-- whatever LoneStar furnish's in 1/32 and 1/16. glue is off the shelf Contact Cement, layer on each side of the balsa, you have to be right the 1st time--no giggling the piece around to fit. width depends on the bend radii. no idea of wieght, hasn't been a factor with me. also wet the piece just before applying it to form- helps in sharp bends. will look for a cutout piece/ sample and photo it for you. if weight is a concern, you could make cutouts in it with a hole saw, that is in flat surfaces. yell if you need more info. here is the cabin cowl of my 81" Stout Sky Car. dick

I finished this first one about a year ago from a plan in a French Mag. 6 feet wingspan, Saito .80.
Now started a CL-415 wter bomber that is going to be 94" wingspan powered by two RCV-60SP engine. Will also have operational retracts and will pick up and dump 1 litre of water.

Have you tried just a 0°/45°/0°, or have you only tried by adding the second 45°. I would think with the taper on some of the pieces that I would not need the second 45° since the shape would give me a phantom layer just by its contour. (eg. the rounded turtledeck, the rounded bottom of the fuse past the landing gear plate)

Last winters project, A 68inch Boeing P-12 came in at 15 pounds. Scratch built from John Tanzer plans, powered with an OS 120 four stroke pumper. Fly's very scale but maybe just A little under powered if you run into A problem. Very nice plane to build but the CG on the plans is WAY off, if you build one be carefull of that!!

Wow! You guys sure come out with some awsome planes!!! Looking good everyone. About a month ago I thought I'd try designing so I went and bought an electric power system and drew some simple plans. Inpspired by the foamie section I went with blue core foam as my building material. I then built the plane and installed the gear and it was a winner! So, next i improved on my design and built a new plane with the same specs but new mods. This plane will maiden today hopefully!!! I know foam is not held highly in a purist mind but it getts the job done fast and light.

Sean:
Unlike building from some one else's plans, your airplanes are true scratch builds, don't allow anyone to disparage your efforts.
Doesn't matter what you use, foam, balsa, or even solid lead. You are building, experimenting, and learning, while you are also enjoying doing it.
Keep it up.
Bill.

Maybe someone could give the definitive answer on scratch building. Is it really scratch building if you use someone elses plans?
