Default confused about positioning floats

I have a Sig Rascal 40 (72"). I have just started building a GP 36" floats for it. I've never done floats before so I started reading threads to enlighten myself. The manual with the floats says to position the floats so the step is at or slightly ahead of the CG. A thread I found was for Rascals on floats and member AIVIA wrote a great couple paragraphs about his floats on the plane and included a few great photos (a picture's worth 1000 words). But one of the pictures showed the step 2" BEHIND the CG. An article I found in the forum from a man named Cunningham (I think) said the step should not be more than 1/2" behind CG. Avia mentioned he would move the floats forward 1/2" but that still has the step 1 1/2" behind CG.

This is the thread I read from, maybe I read wrong...but I'm still confused.

Default RE: confused about positioning floats

Having the step that far back would cause the kind of self-steering problem he describes. The floats will work fine with the step anywhere from +1/2" to -1/2" from the CG.

Thanks Jim, I thought that was a bit much.

About the time Chuck Cunningham wrote his landmark article for RCM, this article appeated in Model Aviation. It covers a lot of the same ground, but it goes deeper into technicalities.
