This is how I was explained the purpose of these props. So that the area outside the big round cowl was getting some usable thrust.

Agreed! Thank you all for the great input. I believe I will replace the bearings and ring (If I can find one, HH is out of stock).

Crank & bearings.

Rear bearing feels grittier than I think it should be, and doesn't roll real smooth. Front bearing is Ok, but if I am going to replace one, I might as well do both.

The black stuff at the very bottom of the jug will scrape off with fingernail, so it is not the chrome flaking off.

The ring is free, still has some "spring" to it. Ill tear it down more and post pics of the cams and bearings.

I did think something looked funny about the finish on the cylinder. I'll get some more pictures together later. Maybe in the long run I would just be better off with a new jug and ring.

Ok, Ill take some shots of the cam lobes tonight. They are worn, but I don't think excessively. I'm trying to find somewhere to get a puller so that I can remove the crank and get a better look at...

Picked up this engine a while ago. Not sure of the history of it, but got it at what I though was a fair price. It was a little sticky to turn over, and didn't seem to have a ton of compression...

I'd almost be willing to bet money that first annual will cost the most lol.... That's what my mech's all tell me when I talk to them about buying a new plane... Especially if it is an east/west...
