I think its a kind of free wheel that rotate at high speed to keep the heli stable, like if you take a bicycle wheel and make it turn in your hand it will be harder to move, I think he want to keep...

yes the center diff is locked and the only gears that are plastic are the reduction gears but you can remplace them by metal ones
