Surely the ribs are secured[glued]to the spars to stabalise them , the rib tapes are to cover the ribs where they touch the covering . To give extra thicknes in case the covering wears though a bit ....

Wing tubes cost me nothing . I get some thin cardboard & wrap it a couple of layers around a piece of 5/8 " dowel . I use an old calendar , just the right weight . use ca & scotch tape to glue it .
