i have my pickup tube flush with the stator wall and it works great for me. This is on the graupner mini jet though but dont see any reason for it too be different on other drives.

i just wrap mine in a baloon, take a cabletie the end, then put in a dash of silicon and another cabletie. Dont think any water's getting in.
