Probably a conversion? The tires on the back remind me vaguely of stadium truck tires. Actually, any LiPO should work good for backyard bashing and having fun. Ascend is pretty decent and so is Onyx....

Yeah, 2S would work very well. A new Traxxas XL5 ESC (LiPO support, waterproof, cheap) will run you about 40 dollars on eBay and lasts forever. I still have my one from 2008 that works great.

You would need to add a Tamiya connector to that battery. A reason why Venom's Universal Connectors make RC so much easier.
