RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

OF,

Please explain; why do you think a Saito, which does not use the crankcase for breathing (like a YS four-stroke), will not be able to breathe, if the passage to the cam-box is shut using...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

OK, Dave.

I guess you have more engines there, as sources of knowledge...

Yet, there are still those, who in this thread wrote of finding the cam-box bone-dry, after running their engines...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Dave,

How can oil in the crankcase of an engine, which bases its entire lubrication on blow-by (i.e. not oil that was in the crankcase before the engine was run), be completely devoid of any...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Maybe, Dave.

But as I remember and reading your posts that showed those components wet with oil, I could not see proof that this oil went through the engine, before getting to the cam-box......

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Paul,

Post #224 does not actually detail any mod as such...

What did you mean, exactly?

The suggestion in post #225 does not work very well either.

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Craig,

Is that 10 (ten) hours of labor incurred to Saito, by HH, for the repair of one engine??? Or is it minutes?

I will give up my day job, to be paid a 10 hour fare for 30 minutes of...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Steve,

Even though no one cared to state this in the Saito manual, I believe both the cam-box and the rocker chamber must be oil-filled by the engine user and periodically topped up.

It...

BW,

I think we are done here.

Besides, my hair is pretty thick and will overload the micrometer... ;)

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

CW,

Noted.
Please read this crucial information, from David Vizard.

He's quite a notable character in auto engines (British, I believe).

Also see this article, and this one too.

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

So, CW, do you suppose the theorem in cam manufacturers' publications has been incorrect all along, or has it become so just lately?

After all, you have observed that the lifters do rotate (if...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

CW and BW,

I know how things are manufactured and that there is a tolerance for virtually anything...

But I believe that if a cam manufacturer has an objective; to design the cam-lobes...

And a camera...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

BW,

Are you saying the .0002"-.0003" tapers CW found on all the cam-lobes are 'incidental', unintentional production tolerances?

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

CW,

What I am saying, is that even though the bottom of the lifter has a radiused, convex surface, it will not spin as the engine is running; if the surface of the cam-lobe contacting it is...

CW,

I disagree with you on this. And I have rebuilt 38 full-size engines...

Books on cam theory specifically say the cam-lobes of any flat-tappet camshaft, MUST be angle ground (roller...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

Bruce,

Of-course I know this...

And it is even for these reasons alone, that model engine manufacturers should have designed the valve actuation components better than they did...

The 'admission' by OS...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

That's true, Ed.

Insufficient ring-gap - seized engine, broken ring, high wear.

Too large a ring-gap - low compression and high oil consumption (in full-size engines).

If you...

RE: Saito 115 cam lubrication

But then, the oil would not get to the camshaft and the lifters; would it?

There is a problem, the magnitude of which affects different engines differently.
