Primarily because people are sloppy in their speech and a commonly incorrect term eventually becomes the norm. That doesn't mean it's correct, just common phraseology. Like facial tissue is called...

No offense Jeff. The guy that wrote the dictionary was likely an English major and wouldn't know an engine if it hit him in the head.

Man, I really have to jump on this one. 1320 Fastback has it right but incomplete. It really bothers me when engines get called motors. An engine is an engine not a motor.
