RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Hi Ed,

Sorry for the delay. I was traveling and lost site of this thread.

Your plan sounds very reasonable. I would stick to a 32 cell count with the 90-O-Acro ESC and start with a 20x11...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Hi Stu,

No, I haven't seen any of the AXI 53xx series motors yet. Since both the new AXI series and Actro 40 series need a higher power ESC, I expect to see Hobby Lobby address this issue soon....

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Darrell,

Be wary of the Lithium purist ideals and of manufacturers specifications. In general, they don't fly anything bigger than a parkflyer. You are better off not taxing Lithium packs at...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Here is a Kokam 2.1AH cell connected directly to a 12v battery.

First it swells and then starts to smoke a little.

Then....

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Matt,

Yes, you just picked the wrong cell to explode. I have many others that you can get a "fix" from. :)

Even the damage issue is being addressed by FMA Direct and Kokam USA. They will be...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Darrell,

You ask a very good question so it is time for me to reveal the latest technology. I will post some photos tomorrow to show you what a 2.1AH cell does when you apply 12 volts directly...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

This is the new FMA Flight Systems Flight Recorder (FSFR) and Whatt Meter. The Whatt meter plugs into the FSFR which in turn plugs into the FS8 receiver.

Here are the specs on the Whatt Meter:

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

The Pitch/Roll sensor was mounted under the plane on the gear mains hatch. This was a good position for the 4 sensors to "see" forward, backward, and to teach side.

The vertical sensor for rolls...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

My Edge 540 is getting re-fitted with an FS8 Co-Pilot system from FMA Direct for true failsafe operation.

The FS8 system is like putting your aircraft in a protective bubble. The DSR technology...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

rm,

I would wait to see the pricing in the new "unitized" packs. I suspect it will be much more in our favor.

Since the cell tabs are welded together (i.e. 3.2AH + 3.2AH = 6.4AH) the...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

While I wait for my ESC upgrade to arrive, I decided to paint my pilot figure. I didn't get too fancy with it since the Edge 540 canopy is tinted and hides most of the detail.

I will also start...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Henke,

Don't you trust us Americans anymore? ;)

Yes, everything was done at only 1/2 throttle or less. The vertical roll was performed to see just how much energy we had before stalling and...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Matt,

You are right, I am waiting to replace my ESC before flying the Edge again.

Here is a video of my maiden flight. It was a cold and windy day but we were determined. The pilot had only...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Not a problem, Norm. It is all good information and relates to 10s usage. I think Mike may be getting confused between charging packs all the time in series or just at the field. At the field, I...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Hi Norm,

Thanks for checking in. I still miss many of my old E-Zone buddies but barely have the time to keep up here at RCU. I see some guys at the R/C events like WRAM, TOLEDO, and NEAT. You...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Henke,

You are right with your conclusion about the ESC heat at half throttle but that is where it will be set at to fly at a normal pace. Anything higher will be used for high performance...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Matt,

The unwritten specification here is the overall quality of the internal components. It's like comparing a Cadillac to a Chevy of similar size. The Actro motor is the best built outrunner...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Here is a fly-by sequence. Unfortunitly, I missed the knife edge pass as my buddy caught me off guard just watching in amazement.

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Here are some photos of my maiden take-off. The misty rain played havoc with my camera's IR focus. You can see on the ground shot just before take-off that my Edge 540 was wet.

We didn't know...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Henke,

My understanding is that the Schulze controllers are the very best, much like the Actro motors. The 90-O is definitely the way to go!

Perhaps a decade or two ago, you may have gotten...

RE: Hangar 9 33% Edge 540

Darrell,

You have a good point. Henke conveyed that the 90-O is good for coping with high current for long periods but the less expensive 135-O should easy handle 80-90amps if it is rated for...
