Answer for the synthetic oil question. Synthetics just take longer to complete a break in, BUT, the end result of the longer break in is a slightly better fit of the relative components.

For ultra cold winter running you can use a special self sticking aluminum tape to wrap the block and head. Simple tinfoil will do if you can assure security. Better know what your CHT's are all...
