I want a Decathlon?

RE: I want a Decathlon?
Goldberg makes a fantastic Decathlon. It takes a 60 2-stroke or 90ish 4-stroke.
I put a YS 91AC in one and you could loop it in Knife-Edge Flight! EASILY!
The only Mod I would suggest is to remove the wingtips. CGM gave it long wingtips to bring the wingspan to an IMAA Legal 80" but the roll rate is much better without them.

I don't know what size Decathlon you are looking for. I'm currently gearing up to build a Dynaflite Super Decathlon, 89" wingspan, and going to build it with a Zenoah G-38. It's definitely a big bird if that's what you are looking for. You can find it at:

Can anyone tell me if the plane size makes a big diffrence?

seriously, Global makes an ARF, 63 inch wing, .52-.61 2-stroke or .70-.91 4 stroke, $160 through Hobby People, and there are the above mentioned ones from Goldberg and Dynaflite, and Midwest also makes a kit, 80 inch wing, .65-.91 4 stroke, $210.
Then there's THIS thing, saw it at Joe Nall last year, just what every Citabria fan needs, a 50% scale model:

Seagull also makes an ARF of the Decathlon, I actually have one and love it. Flies great with a 70FS on it and with full rates it does some nice Lomcevak. One thing though if you go to the ARF section here and look up Seagull SD's you don't need a gyro on the rudder despite what some pros in that thread will try to beat you over the head that it does, with a low rate on the rudder or a soft left thumb you'll be fine(rudder is very effective). Figure eights low and in front of yourself are fun to do with this thing aswell(just like how it looks)

Tower sells a Pheonix .46 sized ARF one for next to nothing. There are a couple threads already about this plane. My final came out at 7.5 pounds, 66"WS, 705 Sq.In. with a Magnum .91 four stroke on it. Cheap to build, still waiting on decent weather to fly it.

RE: I want a Decathlon?
Hi Mike, I have a phonex model also. I hate to admit it, but I installed a magnum 52. Not a good match. Too under powered. The plane flyes but take off is a challenge. Had almost two fatalities during take off. the rudder is very sensative at low airspeed. I noticed you installed the mangnum 91, did you need to add much tail weight? I was thinking more on the lines of a magnum 70. What are your thoughts? thanx

RE: I want a Decathlon?
hey all
Ive been hearing from some people that this bird(the seagull model 46size) is CRAP with a 46 some guy at my flying club got one with a 46 ax and it barley creeps off the ground, alternatively i have herd reports that with a 60 engine its a good bird.
I am contemplating, at 7-8plbs and dubbed !QUOT!the lead sled!QUOT!, getting one and kitting it out with a super tigre G90, overkill? probably
but hey its a cheap plane so if it tears its self to bits in the air, just buy a new one!
any one here got any experience of the SD by seagull with a 46 whats your view
regards
James
