Hiya kidz!

Been busy working all weekend but managed a build on the Teksumo!

Raining here ATM but may trying it later in the PM or in the early AM!

The specs are:

6X4 prop

AXN motor (Thanx Rob!)

AXN 25amp ESC

HK 500 size servos

470gm with battery

560 AUW with 60 grams of lead weight hot glued in.

191 Watts with 20amps pulled

I put ALL me equipment on top and in addition I made a "CG machine" off the web b/c it is soooo important to get CG right and I wouldn't believe my "finger method"!

Clear skies!!!

Funny... I always just balanced mine on the edge of a yardstick; the hard part is calculating where it should be, and they already did that part for you.

Yah, but I'm half an idiot.

I need a "machine" to make it work.

PS mnem,

Did you notice that the electronics bay has ample room for a refurbished APM?

So, clamp a yardstick into your hobby vise... or clamp a large Vise-Grip on one end of a ruler so it holds it edge-up laying on your workbench. There... machine.

Yah... you have your ESC piggybacked on the motor mount, (I actually make my motor mounts out of aluminum and attach the ESC so it mates to the heatsink) so lots of room in there. I'm kindof disappointed in the servo mount arrangement they made; I prefer to mount my servos flat with just the arm protruding up. That setup DOES require a bit more work, but it's worth it.

Sorry if the detail isn't the greatest; I'm not a great artist. But I think you can get the idea... Just assemble the 4 1/4" x 1/4" pieces on the servo, and use the assembly as a template to make your cutout in the foam. Then put epoxy or hot glue on the bottom 1/4" x 1/4" pieces with it still assembled and BAM! a perfectly flush flat mounted servo. You can then undo the 4 top screws and remove the servo to reinforce the bottom 1/4" x 1/4" pieces after your hot glue or epoxy sets.

Yah, the yardstick and vice deal wouldn't work for me where I am but a great tip none the less!

I made one of THESE for about five bux!

You're right re: a better mouse trap for servo mounts but I will say, those jokers are in there TIGHT in that pool doodle material!

b

PS Jonesy, anything to share with the class?

Notice I went real easy on Ownseysa after his fishing expedition

Thats because I may need the favour returned after tomorrow.

After much niggling by Brian Im taking the 5 year old unmaidened Cessna out tomorrow.

It took me an hour to work out how to program the radio for dual Ailerons.

Its been sitting for so long the decals are peeling off and a servo fell out of the wing.

All Ive done is hot glued the servos in, checked to make sure its trimmed and charged the batteries.
Oh and taken the landing gear off. At least something will survive.

Wonder how long a 5 yr old lipo will last Prob longer than Im expecting the flight to

Watch this space for some carnage.

Looking forward to it!

If you take to it you can get some big ole "Dugro" landing gear that can tolerate your rank landing strip!

Toldja you'd love these things!

A couple pointers, from hard-won experience... and watching the other guys at the Club closely:

Avoid landing on the asphalt; it'll eat your wing no matter how much "armor" you put on it.

Get rid of the screw-on prop hub and get a prop-saver hub; use double or triple O-rings to keep the props from flying off.

Landing these is an art that once learned, will benefit you on any fixed wing craft; you want to bring it in slow on a gentle glide path, kill throttle & let it scrub off speed. Keep it aloft until you're almost stopped (the stall speed on these things is ridiculously slow) then pull back on the "elevator" and let it flare-out and fall flat. Easy-peasy. Even I have managed to get it right more than a few times.

The braver ones at my Club (like Mason) will actually fly it right at themselves the same way, only they just catch it in the air. I never got THAT good with them. Yet.

The 1200mm Slope-soarers are more popular as an FPV platform, though. I know a couple of guys on DIYDrones that's all they fly; twin 5AH packs and aloft forever, doing the "Extended range" thing.

@ ingleburn - Just so's you know that I'm appalled at your inference that I falsified my maiden ala "Simon". That thing simply is dumbass proof and flies on rails! YOUR maiden on the other hand was obviously performed by one of your mates!

@ mnem - Valid points and noted!

@ All - Takin' my 3 month old puppy to the vet for a well visit and then off to the flying club!

Looks like us "poor sods" now have an actual "Entry-Level" Taranis to distract ourselves with:

It's called pushing the envelope of depth perception. Tree's are always way closer than they look.

Speaking of sharing with the class.... I heard YOU had something to share with the class :P

Yah, stay away from the net!

All back together and hoping that "Bob Smith industries, Insta-Flex" flexible CA will do the job otherwise I have to use Dubro hinges or FG tape!

My observation is, is that one needs to take a piccy of their plane at maiden because that is as pretty as it's EVER going to look!

Got a LOT done around the house of late! I had the whole exterior painted, yard done to include the "burn pile" that was getting right HIGH!

At the same time I was having the house painted the aged pool pump died. My neighbor found me a "new/old stock" MONSTER for 1/5th the price of the a new one and I did a really NICE install yesterday.

One other minor project and I'll be all caught up for the summer!

I hope to fly next Wed/Thursday as I figured out why my Fox Glider was acting up right after I installed three rate levels. I plugged them into the "elevators" DOH!

Gotta be smarter than the Tx!

Speaking of which, to reduce the intimidation of the OpenTx platform, have a look at this viddy series!

Yeah, Mark Harrison has a page up on his website with quick-links to all of them, plus a number of other useful resources:

Didja rip the elevons off your TekSumo? You can repair fairly easily with Dermicel tape...

Yeppers. Married to a nurse. Tried the tape, ALL tapes with the exception of the tape that came with it, fiberglass tape which Jonesly says works.

In lieu of that I am experimenting with Bob Smith industries Instaflex flexible CA.

We'll see! Gotta find time to test it!

All the best!

Sorry... had a brain fa*t. Blenderm, not Dermicel.

Tape hinges are made this way:

It's important to make sure the top tape and the bottom tape stick to each other in the gap, but as small a gap as possible while still permitting that.

For thicker wings where the width of Blenderm isn't enough to make a single continuous hinge, you make individual hinges perpendicular to the edge of the wing from strips cut long enough to give adequate bonding surface.

I've seen the guys fix everything with that stuff; little foamies, big foamies, stick-built even. And especially their flying wings. If the paint gets in the way of it sticking, smear a little Foam-Tac on it then let it get tacky. You REALLY need Foam-Tac for repairs if you're going to fly these. It doesn't crack out like CA.
