HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I have a deicision to make. Which servo for the tail. I have gy401 i would like to go digital but i am a beginer so i want to go with somthing good but cheap. If it would be better to go analog that is fine. I know all about the walk on water s9650. I might get one later and use the one i have on the tail for a spair. I would like to get my heli together but i still need servos, and an engine. Im going to use 3-hs 55 and a align 430l. Which i can buy at a fair price. You guys know how i feel the wife nags about how much you have spent on you heli instead of her. Like to say if i spend buy just enough to get it going instead of spending over 1000.00 at once i can spend a little at a time and have a great heli a great radio and then update later.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
There are alot of nice tail servos out there. I was running the hds577 and it is also a digital for close to the same price as a hs56. I also had a hs81, it was great. there are many more but those i can vouch for.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I use the 9650 but its around 60 bucks however I read on other forums that people use 3154 for the tail might wanna try it. Its cheaper than the 9650 and smaller too. When I get my 3rd heli I will use the 3154 for the tail.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I see the GY-401 and S9650 are a very popular combo. Although I have no idea what a "digital" servo has to offer over an analog(?) servo.
And although I haven't ever used a CP 3D heli I imagine that the gyro talks to the tail servo and changes of the tail blades so that the tail stays locked in?
Thanks,
Tj.
P.S
Why is it that we can't just use the 4 same servos, why do we need 3 for the swash plate and then a different for the tail?

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I have read that the 3154 will get hot if you use to many volts. I try to check out every option. And as for why i need a different servo for the tail is because that is the most important servo. It makes youre heli a better heli.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
Ok guys I'm going to get a TRex but I want to know if the HS-81 will run on a 35X ESC. Any ideas? If not what is another cheap alternative to the HS-81 as opposed to he AU$100 S9650 =/.
Thanks

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
Or I can get a GY401/S9254 combo deal for $290.
I haven't found many comments on the S9254, is it relatively new..out dated etc?
Also, will it run ok on a 35X ESC, 11.1V 15C 2200mAh?
Thanks again,
Tj.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I'm using the 3154 and it works well. I must admit, it does get warm even just sitting there when I make adjustments and the battery is plugged in. As far as I can recall it is rated for 6V. Don't have the box in front of me now, but I would't have bought it if it was't rated 6V. Let's see how long it lasts....

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
The S9254 series is way too big to use on a Trex, it is standard servo size. I have on right here, brand new, that I would love to trade for a S9650.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I went with the GY401/S9650 and love it!! sure its expensive but it makes the tail rock solid and, in turn, easier to fly...
don't quote me but from what i've heard digital servos respond quicker to tx inputs than analog servos do... i've also heard that they center better.
I would definitely go with digital for the tail just my $.02

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
tolla; I know alot of people who tried that servo and only one of them are still going and consiquently it is on 5v but it still heats up more then it did when first used. I have read all the hype about it being over voltaged being the culprit for it burning out but it burns out on 5v aswell. I have come to the conclusion it is too small for the high stress of 3d flight. plus i run a 2200mah battery that weighs in at 170grams so i need something with alittle weight on it back there.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
I have seen the 3154 for sale on helihobby and it does say 6v. Then i have read other people say they have talked to futaba and they say no more than 5.4v. Sounds like someone messed up and are trying to cover their tracks.
It looks like I have no choice but to use the S9650. It looks like you can't buy a cheap digital and expect it to be better than an analog servo.

The HS81MG is a great budget servo for the tail. I highy reccomend it. I one on both my S and SE...it works well witht the telebee gyro also. I do hard sport flying and am learnign 3D...loops roll...and tick tocks.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
If your just learning the only benifit digital will give is that your going to want one later when you get into the hard 3d, and when that happens you will need a good strong servo with great holding power so it wont let go. I seriously think a hs81 will be the ducks nuts for what you need. I use a hs85 witha 12mm horn and it holds great for all my needs. I am no great pilot but i do stress the heli out

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
The s3154 is half the cost of a s9650. It will heat up do to the work it has to put in and you will be buying another. Why not buy the s9650 and be set it's proven.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
Well I just bought 3 hs-55 and one hs-81. All for less than one S9650. I thought i would buy a 9650 but everybody else wanted one on ebay so I will just keep on bidding on one until I get a great price and use my hs81. Thank you for all the suggestions keep them coming for everyone else.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
The HS-55 will do okay for your cyclic, but the HS56 be good and the HS65 would be even better. If your just hovering and puttering around the HS81 will be just fine, but when you go 3D you will want more torque and power of a digital servo to hold the tail

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
Well ya get what ya pay for....mostly. I started out with the exact same combo (hs55s and hs81). Eventually I stripped gears in the 55s and went to hs65s w/ karbonite gears all around. They're not indestructable but they are pretty stout. Now however, I'm using JRs (JRPF300H) Performance Mini Heli ServoSet (159.00 @ heliproz.com) These servos and the carbon fiber frame kit (also heliproz.com 58.00) were the 2 most significant upgrades I've done on the rex, and beleive me I've done them all (though i like futaba's s9650 better than the JR for the tail). I've used every servo mentioned in this thread and more. As far as the CF frame goes if you've already got an SE or SA you're already set, it's just the plastic frame with all the sloppy linkages that sucked.[:'(] Anyhow that combo will get you some airtime, just make sure not to overdrive any of those servos.
Hey Kurtzz it so happens I need an s9254 for my caliber 30 and I have a s9650 that has never been touched by human hands. You show me yours and I'll show you mine.

RE: HELP TAIL SERVO CHOICES
Well, I dunno if the DS3400G is JR’s BEST tail servo for the t-rex but they seem to think enough of it to set suggested retail @ $119.99, of course they usually go for about 75 bucks. As far as specs go the JR is a little bit faster (by about 0.03 sec.(0.14 vs 0.11)) but the s9650 has a bit more torque (by about 8 oz-in (50 oz-in vs 42 oz-in)). The speed I can compensate for through linkage setup, limits and expo but, as we say in drag racing, “there is no replacement for displacement!” Or torque in this case. Not that the JR is a bad servo, I’ve got a 9650 here, and I’m still running the JR. Mostly because I’m too lazy to change it and the JR is a smaller servo which I kinda like.
OK then as far as flying the two, the JR is constantly trying to re-center itself so it buzzes constantly. There’s nothing wrong with that really, it just gets annoying while your listening for other things (I mean on the ground, if its buzzing during flight, I certainly can’t hear it). The 9650 centers itself and remains dead silent. I’m using a gy401 of course so maybe futaba just has it dialed in perfectly or maybe the lil JR is just searching for perfection in an unperfect world.
Because of the difference in torque, (…I guess, 8oz-in doesn’t seem like that much…) I can get the 9650 to whip the tail around instantly. It’s pretty obvious during even simple pirouettes. The JR seems cause a bit of a lag, then the heli builds up speed in a pirouette.
The JR also drifts just ever so slightly from time to time but I think it might be caused by radio noise coming off the CF frame. The 9650 though is just rock farking solid (once you’ve got your heli’s curves set up properly of course.)
After coming back from a cup of delicious (and nutritious) Starbucks coffee and reading through this it seems as if I’m in favor of the s9650! But honestly they’re both awesome servos. For me, it comes down to this, JR=75 bucks Futaba=54 bucks hmmmm…what could I do with 21 bucks…?[sm=50_50.gif] Buy 3 more cups of coffee!!! [sm=what_smile.gif]
