RE: Ziroli DC-3
Hi-
Thought I would inform you guys about my DC-3/C-47 project. It's slightly enlarged compared to Ziroli's DC-3, with increased wing span for better prop clearance and more washout in the wings. It is being built in all composite, which should result in 10-20% less weight than a model built in wood. All panel lines and rivets are included in the mold. Hope to have the first one in approx. one month from now. Planned power is 2 x 40-50cc gassers, or 2x Moki 210 glow engines. I enclose some pix of the model under building and the full-size Norwegian Air Force C-47 it will resemble.

Hi-
Yes, the stabilizer is removable in two parts, and the wing is removable in three parts. The wing center-section holds the engines and undercarriage. The fuselage is also dividable in two parts for easy transport. Wingspan of the DC-3 is 150", length 97".
See some more pix below, including a flying prototype. Also working on other models like 1:5 scale Cessna 182, 1:5 warbirds and turbine models.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Just finished installing the fin and rudder. The stab is already installed after being glassed with 1/2 oz cloth and West System epoxy as is the fin.I covered the stab and rudder with Coverall and will be finished with Stits products.I enlarged the bellcrank for the rudder and it seems a lot smoother now than the previous one.Its not much bigger than the first one but the difference is much improved.Im currently finishing installing the tailcone.I hollowed it out to leave about a 1/8" wall and it is alot lighter than expected,so I'm just going to install it permanently and glass it later.Im still thinking about making an access hatch for the pull-pull connection at the fin which I'll probabily do next.
I was looking at the article in Oct. MAN (backpage) on Jimmy Mazurecks marvelous B25J powered by Saito 180 four strokes at 37 lbs dry and almost 42 lbs wet, and it makes me want to reconsider engine options for my DC3.Great job by Jimmy.I already have one Saito 180 maybe I should consider getting another one.Would be a considerable undertaking though.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Components installed on tray ready for install in fuse. After the air tank was installed I installed the receiver. I chose to have the switch/charger,air valve, air guage, behind the pilots door.I need to figure out what hinges to use for the doors next front and back.Any help here would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to allow > 90 deg. door opening without the hinge protruding the surface somewhat.
Those Tatone hinges, at least, can be covered with some fairings- which can be made scale for the rear cargo door (I forgot if you're going cargo or passenger- I'm going cargo C-47). For the front door and rear small door, it would be really nice if we could find a really, really small piano hinges or the like.
I also found this site with some small hinges that might work:

Steve,
DC-3 for the moment is on backburner. Done a lot of work but for the moment opted to do a turbine trainer but that has stalled for the last few weeks because of turbine problems and also I had health issues.[&o]
Hope to get back to the Dakota in the near future.
Thanks for the info.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Y'know, Steve, the more I think about, the Robarts probably aren't ideal for the big doors, as they won't open past 90 deg. If you add some scale fairings, some butt hinges ought to work quite nicely, and will allow you to open the doors 180 deg. I guess it depends on the "open" look you want.

Steve,
there was an earlier part to that thread but most of the photos were deleted by their admin.
That plane is much bigger than the Ziroli one as it is around 200" and using 2 G62. Agree the detailing is very nice but he used litho plate covering. I am sure that the weight would be prohibitive on the Ziroli plane. That's an issue that one has to consider when doing this plane as it is a most rivetting experience
Anyway I leave you in peace and carry on with the work so you can kick start me back to it

Steve,
I have a zirolli DC-3 that my dad built. the plans are lost, and I'm not sure what to set the thrust lines of the engines to. Also could you give me the location of the CG? Nice looking C-47 by the way.

Brian ;Looks like 3 deg down and 0 deg offset, and 7 to 7 1/2 behind the leading edge for the c/g.The 3 degress down was likley set when your Dad installed the firewalls, better to check it though...Good luck

Hey Rueben;Thought it looked bigger but not quite that big..wow..I'm going with West System /glass then Flite Metal ,thats the plan anyway.I don't think weight will be an issue with that.

I have followed your progress on your airplane with interest. I have not started building mine as of yet. I have too many other projects which should be finished by the end of the year. What you have done so far looks great. Where did you obtain your cockpit kitand pilots? I will continue to watch your progress.
Thanks
Fred
