Pby-2
I started the construction of a PBY-2 last April, from RCM Modeler Plan #649. Pictures shown here :

Hi David,
It is a pretty interesting plane to build, but it is small in size, specs as follow :
Wingspan - 66-1/2 Inches
Length - 43 Inches
Wing Area - 520 Sq. Inches
Engines - (2) OS .15 LA
Channels - 3 Elev. Rud. Throttle
Weigth R.-T.-F. - 80 oz
Plan show the use of one servo with a split throttle cables for engine control, I won't go that way, I prefer to put one servo in each nacelle so I will have more control over the engine setting and it will make synchronization a simpler task.

I got 1 plane with 2 engines,and three with 4 engines.I used
one servo for throttles and use a dowel at full throttle to set
them.Never have had any trouble yet,I like em to run right at mid
range an full throttle,Dont worry about idle as long as there all
running and I can kill them with the trim.I,d like to see it when
its finished.

David,
Finally, I decided not to use servos in the nacelles, there is not enough space anyway to fit a standard servo there and i don't want to invest in micro servos. I'm glad to hear that you don't have any trouble with your setup. I will go with the original plan.
Thank you for the infos and comments

This is slightly off the discussion but I saw a Honda car commercial last night with what looked like the same PBY in it. In the bones too! Creepy.....
That wouldn't be you're plane would it?? Do I win something? A new S-2000 pleeze....
Has anyone besides me seen it? Or am I still seeing things.... :stupid:

Hi all:
First off I saw that commercial also but I think the model is a Guillows kit. As far as the RCM plans PBY goes I built one about 15 years ago and it was a sweet flying plane, didn't even need wheels to fly off the grass it just scooted right off on it's belly and also would fly on one OS15 if one quit. I could even make turns into the dead engine. (carefully)

Very nice PBY Acobra !
The plan suggest bent nails each side of the nose for the spray rails but I doubt this setting gives enough surface to keep the water away from the engine. I see that you made larger rails on your model, would you please comment about that.
By the way, I modified the throttle assembly with a more simple setup. I installed a servo in the center of the pylon/wing with connecting Sullivan throttle cable to each engine. This eliminates the need for the dacron line, the carburator double-arm extension and the springs as shown on the original plan. The small radius of the throttle cable is not an issue here, I still have a smooth control throw. I will publish picture of the throttle modification soon.

Thats basiclly the setup i use, except x4.One servo,4 brass coated
cables to each engine. They all move exactly the same,Just set
the carbs close. No trying to time servo,s or mixers.Simple and
dependable.Crank them both wide open,Tune by the pitch there
making,Then hold it up and check for leaness, forget tacking
them. When the pitch sounds even,Go fly.

I also used flexible throtle cables and the one servo system much simpler. YES! the spray rails are larger, I had nothing but trouble with the smaller rails (these are just shaped balsa) Just about the time it was about to come up on to the step (it really plows at first) the water would get to the left (always the left) engine and drown it out hence the larger rails and concave underside of the rails.

I like your a/c... looking real good... Where can i get a set of the plans? I noticed you said in RCM. which issue? Also.. do you guys think it'd be OK to enlarge them to fit say, to .40 4-strokes?
I've not seen many/any kits of plans for the Cattie at all... There's a big 80" +- WS one in my LHS... with 2 .40 2-strokes on it. It's a little too big, an he wants about 2 grand to sell it. (not to mention, i'd reather crash my own work than fly someone elses).
I will admit I ARF'd in the beginning, but I think I'm getting over that now.
thanks

Fuselage covered - The 1/64 plywood skin was prep with Balsarite then covered with small pieces of Monokote.

RE: Pby-2
Thank you David
-------------------
Ray,
From my own point of view, I don't think its worth the time and money to enlarge
this set of plans. It is not a scale model and the construction techniques used
are probably not suitable for a bigger version.
I hope to find a set of Sid Morgan's PBY plan. I think this plan is for scale version but I don't know the size of the plane.
