MR-02 Christmas First Impressions
So today I first got my hands on a MR-02 and all I can say is wow. I already own may other mini and micro r/c cars including an Overland, Mini-T, VMG, and a few others. I never really got a Mini-Z racer, because my friend had a MR-01, and I always beat him in races inside and in the garage with my Overland (of course mine had an X-Speed and BB ). So this Xmas I finally decided to get a MR-02.
When I took off the wrapping paper I saw the rectangular box mostly in a light blue, with a bright orange McLaren F1 LM (the worlds fastest production car, and it's British, Study!) sitting surrounded in a clear plastic. The packaging is first class, and looked so good that I hardly wanted to take the MR-02 out of the box. Yeah right! I ripped that car out of the box, and began to do basic assembly (screwing in the antenna and such). The MR-02 is truly RTR. Being the smart kid that I am, I had a set of freshly recharged NiMh batteries ready to use. I popped those suckers in and hit the gas.
I tested it in my finished basement which has a very tight, short carpet. This seemed like a fairly decent place to run a Mini-Z( I frequently run my Overland here as well). The MR-02 had blistering acceleration with the 6 tooth pinion set up even with the stock motor. After about 30 seconds I said "Screw It", sprinted up the stairs and changed the Stock Motor with an X-Speed and the pinion to a 9 tooth (max top speed). The assembly was very easy, I would give it a 3/10 on the difficult scale. You just have to look at the manual and remember which screws to use where.
Now is where the fun really began. I "floored" it (squeezed the trigger on the VERY nice Perfex Remote), and even with the 9 tooth pinion (worst acceration) it still seemed like a rocket. I'd say it was EASILY hitting 15mph (~25Kph) INSIDE! It seemed a little hairy because the steering is super responsive and tends to oversteer quite a bit. My only complaint is the motor has so much torque, and the car weighs so little, that even at fairly high speeds it wants to get sideways.
Well, the batteries are almost charged and I want to use this thing some more, so I am going to end this review.
Kyosho Mini-Z MR-02
Quality: 9/10
Performance 9/10
Detail 10/10
Handling 8/10
Total 27/30 A-

RE: MR-02 Christmas First Impressions
no! tnb is at it again. forcing me to get another car . this time, i will go with the miniz, instead of the iwaiver. now that i think about it, i could order one from tower in a week. tnb, will the ball bearings from my iwaiver fit into my mr-02? or should i just get new bearings?

Depending on which Z you get from Tower, it may ship with free bearings. Make sure to check the daily specials. A while back the yellow MR-02rml F50 was $89.00, but the red MR-02rml F50 was also on special for $89.00 but with bearings. Either way, the bearings should fit but I would just get another set anyway if you plan to run both R/Cs.
