Just picked up an Associated 18T today....
Been into RC stuff for decades... get into it hardcore for a few years, get PO'd at myself for sinking tons of money into it, eventually sell some of it off.. wait a few years and repeat the cycle ... So today, the 18T really caught my attention... and I picked one up at a local HobbyTown USA. Battery's charging right now, .. I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow, but am looking forward to it.
So, is it true that the 18T and 18B are exactly the same except for the tires and body?
Where's a good place to buy battery packs and motor upgrades?

i have the rc18mt. yep, you are right, the only difference between the three is the rear shock tower (B has the wing mount holes, but you can still mount a wing on the MT and T rear towers), tires, and the mt is geared a tooth lower. check out unitedrc.com or cheapbatterypacks.com for some good battery packs. motor upgrades.... try towerhobbies, or amainhobbies.com. the mamba brushless is nice. i just ordered the 18B wing mount and vendetta wing to make a "truggy" out of mine, already have some nice red aluminum wheels with pin tires on it right now. also have a jconcepts illuzion body for it, but im waiting for the wing and mount to get here, then i'll paint that and mount it up.

Hey Cal, I know how you feel. I've done that before in the past myself. About the 18T, you should love it. But there are a few things that you should do to it before running it, to make it more reliable from the start. I hope I don't get in trouble for sending this link, but I know how hard it is when you get a new RC car or truck and have to search through every nook and cranny to find any needed mod info. If this link is not allowed, please forgive me.

Definately get some shims for the diff if it didn't already have three on the same side.
Also the differences are
18b has a different top plate, different front and rear shock towers, wing mount with a wing, different wheels and tires, and a body.
The 18mt and 18t are pretty much the same except for the wheels and tires, body, and the 18mt is geared 10/60 and the 18b and 18t are geared 14/55. And the 18t and b also have a different spur cover. Thats the little cover on the bottom of the chassis held on with 3 screws. change that to a 60 so you can use and spur gear up to a 60 tooth.

Where can I find some kind of cover for the spur/pinion gears? it's wide open for pebbles/dirt to get into.
I took it out today for the first time... played around on my concrete patio (drove the dog crazy!), and on my lunch break, took it to a baseball diamond (where I heard stuff get caught in the gears ) ...
I also ordered 2 7-cell packs from cheapbatterypacks.com today
When I went to the hobby store where I bought it, they had no idea about any kind of cover for the gears....
Help!

no other options for a gear cover??? Heck, at that price, it's worth just gambling and hoping I don't grind up my gears with dirt/pebbles.. and if they do, I'll have to replace them several times before it would have been worthwhile to get the NASA - legal gear cover

Or you can make one yourself. I did that with left over lexan from body shell.

or you can just get alum gears.

Really, I am not being sarcastic if there is a link to some aluminum gears, I will buy them because I hate plastic gears.

You don't need metal gears, plastic will hold up fine.

I haven't replaced a single gear in my tranny since I shimmed my diffs. All you need is $2 for shims. Which is 2 packs. You put 3 on each diff. On the opposite side of the teeth. I haven't even screwed one up with the brushless.

Wow... this thing is fun and durable! I've smacked a couple curbs pretty hard with it, and no breakage (yet).. however, the stock tires leave a lot to be desired. I'd love to get some Dirt Hawg tires (mounted on rims).. anyone know where I can buy some?
