For $30 I'm sure it does suck, but will be fun around the house. It probably won't be upgradeable at all, so be careful if you break anything on it.
Lets put it this way, Santa brought my 4yr-old son a New Bright r/c Dodge Ram truck, sold at Target/Wal-Mart for like $19.99. It suits him fine and can drive on most terrain. Not too good on steep inclines though...

If you already have a hobby grade r/c, don't get a piece o' crap Wal-Mart type special.

They are decent. Well worth $30. They have a lightweight body, threaded shocks, and a 540 motor. They are very durable, and I haven't tried it yet, but I am pretty sure you could put some HPI, or Tamiya oil shocks on it very easily.

Boy, I guess for some folks if it is not the top of the line it is not worth anything. (I hate that)

I am a total newbie to Hobby grade stuff..Never even touched any, though it looks like great fun.

My kids are pretty young and I was looking for the cheapest decent cars I could find. I bought the Flashfire's when they were on sale for $30 (regular $65). Of course you have to spend another $20 for the battery. (amazon)

Still, I think it is well worth the $50. Comes with an 8 channel controller. decent suspension, and digital proportional everything.

The are not indoor cars of course, but are large and powerfull enough to go over grass etc. so you can use them anywhere outside.

I take my kids (6 and 8) over to a field or a large yard.

Nice intro before jumping to hobby grade stuff though the small hobbyzone car would be another good way to go. It was just a bit pricier and much smaller so I was worried about it going though tall grass and stuff.

Good luck.

ORIGINAL: hands without shadows

Right.......8 channel.
I think by 8 channel he meant that they can be driven on that many different frequencies without changing crystals. If I remember correctly it is only 6 different channels though.
