RE: Can this charge mini 1/18 7.2v batteries
how about this charger. [link]http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=DYN4032[/link] i already have it for my e-maxx that i have. also does anyone know anything about this charger it doesnt say that its a peak but the guy at the habby shop said that it is a peak. but when i first got it im pretty sure that it fried on of my 1500 batts for my emaxx and i took the batt back cause i thought that it might have been faulty and they told me that i turned the timer up to much, but that shouldnt matter if its a peak charger right?

No. It says right on the marketing.
"# 30-minute timer"
If the guy suggested this at the LHS, ask for someone else to help you or find a different HS to support.

It's not a peak charger, and no I would not charge your mini batts on that charger. It has a fixed charge rate of 3.5 amps and it will destroy 2/3a cells very quickly.

Dont worry about Piranhas and other more advanced chargers until you get more into it.

RE: Can this charge mini 1/18 7.2v batteries
The best thing to do is to research how to care for and charge NiCD or NiMH batteries. When you understand charge rates and times, you will make the best charger choice yourself. Sometimes what someone suggest is not for you or just to make a sale ... like the LHS guy. I bought a Duratrax Piranha AC/DC Digital Peak Charger for $50 when my old charger was stolen. I've had it a year now and I can say for $50 it has preformed way above what I expected. I mainly charge my regular sized batts (3300mAh), and when I got a mini-T this summer I used it to charge that battery as well. Any charger with a fixed current I would stay away from unless the price is a serious issue. You will see that a peak charger wont have that dial up timer on it. That is why they call them peak chargers. They stop charging when the battery "peaks" meaning that once a set delta, or change, in voltage occurs the charger stops charging. Sometimes you can get false peaks, thats when it is nice to have a charger that you can program the specs. The Duratrax Piranha AC/DC Digital Peak Charger allows you to change the specs. Charging batteries with a fixed current and timer is not bad, but requires a little more attention and some charging knowledge. I like the Duratrax because once it is programmed for the type of battery you have its just a matter of cooling batteries, slapping them on the charger, hitting a button and killing some time. Like I said it would be to your advantage to learn about charging and maintaining batteries.
Justa quick little lesson here, most chargers are designed to charge sub C size cells. These are the size of the cells that make up your common 7.2v - 9.6v RC car battery packs. Depending on the capacity, or amount of charge the battery can hold, will tell you about what current rate to charge the battery pack. Say you have a 7.2v 3300mAh pack, you can safely charge the pack @ 3.3 amps or even higher, when charging at a higher rate you have to monitor the temp of the pack so it does not damage the pack. Say you go with the safe 3.3 amps. 3.3 amps is the same as 3300 mA (milliamps). mAh stands for "milliamp hour", charging a 3300 mAh pack at 3.3 amps will take about 1 hour to fully charge, if you can safely increase the amp rate, your charge time will go down. This is all good for sub C size cells, but when using smaller packs for your 1/16th and 1/18th scale cars, most packs are made from smaller size batteries usually 2/3 A size. These smaller size cells have to be charged at lower rates or they will be damaged. Once you learn about charging Sub C cells you can apply that to 2/3 A or other size cells but you have to remain within the specs for the smaller sized cell. If you can find the specs of the individual cell, you will know what rate to charge with.
If I were making the choice you are, I would get the Duratrax Piranha AC/DC Digital Peak Charger, it is good for a beginner or everyday basher. If you get serious about racing and battery packs, you can get a top of the line charger in the $100+ range. I didn't want to say that but I did anyway !!!
Honestly once I learned about charging, discharging, and maintaining batteries, knowing what I needed from a charger and what to look for made the choice easier.
Back when I started this hobby in the 80's, we only had NiCD batteries, I ruined several packs before knowing my mistakes. Thanks to newer batteries like NiMH and the Lithium based batteries most of the mistakes I made are things of the past .... and forget about discharging new batts every run !!!

That one specifically says it won't work on mini 2/3a cells:

I agree with the Super Brain. I have the 819 (do not use with 2/3 AA batteries!) that I use on my 3300mah packs. It works very well and gives a quick charge. I am going to pick up a 959 to replace it since I have a mini now. I highly recommend these chargers.

look for peak and look for adjustable charge rates. the super brain 959 will charge your mini bats and your e-maxx batts.
this is another good one. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCLD5&P=ML
but read everthing before you decide. some people will give you bad advice because they want to appear intelligent. others will just because they have been lucky. learn, ask questions, learn some more.

I have a 959, and I use it for 1/10 packs and my mini. It is $25 cheaper than the charger the original post asked about.
