Mamba Sport 4200kV - Did I waste my money?
I bought a Mamba Sport combo with the Max25 ESC and 4200kV motor on total impulse. Now I find out that it is the weakest motor of the line. The plan was to build an RC18T Factory Team kit and use this set up in it. Is this combo faster/better than the RTR version or did I make a mistake buying it?

no, you didn't waste your money. even castle creations says its the best racing motor in their mamba lineup. all you need to do is get a good 2/3 cell lipo and it will be plenty fast.

Cool, thanks! Guess I have to buy a lipo and charger.

no way did you waste your money. i would trade you my 6800 or 5400 for a 4200 in a heart beat. it is BY FAR the best choice for racing because it is controllable and has an amazing amount of torque. you made a great decision in buying this motor and dont let any noobs tell you that it is too slow and a waste of your money. in reality, the noobs are the ones wasting their money with their 8000's that are overgeared... their magnents become less magnetic at the insane temperatures that they get and their motors become less powerful.
(please note, not all noobs are like this)

actually, the low kv's are suitable for use with nimh batteries...
nimh batteries = low amp output, but you have lots of voltage options
lipo batteries = more amps than you ever need but only goes in 3.7v steps
so, what you do is you get a high voltage nimh pack, and use it with a low kv motor, because the nimh cannot give alot of current , you have less torque but the low kv motors have alot of torque already anyway, but you make the motor spin faster by using a higher voltage
with lipo batteries, you are basically stuck with one voltage, so have to choose between different motors instead, including the high kv motors with less torque... but since lipos can give alot of current, you end up with with more torque
of course my favourite setup is a low kv motor with a lipo battery, batteries are more efficient when they are draining slowly , and with the bigger capacity of lipo compared to nimh, i get lots and lots of runtime, like i would never have to worry about the battery running out... i just get bored long before then!

i also prefer lower KV motors.

Well, I'm glad I didn't waste the $90 shipped I paid.
So an 8 cell NiMh GP pack from Cheapbatterypacks should rip pretty good with this set up?

No you didn't waste your money. My 5400kV setup has destroyed absolutely everything in the driveline, almost all on 2s lipo. The 3s has accelerated that effect. The guys with even higher kV setups must have $2k set aside for these things, because I'm damn near close to $1K upgrading things I break EVERY run.

umm i dunnoe if it actually works like that in real life, but i would think that at a higher KV the motors output less torque so it would be less damaging to your drivetrain... but then again what do i know

I had ran a 9200 kv motor in my mini-t with the tekin mini rage esc with a 6 cell 1200 battery it was very touchy and uncontrollable...

This is another good candidate for 4s lipo....

I'll stick to an 8 cell niMh pack. I do not have a lipo charger or the fund for one right now.
