RE: 18R esc ?
the lower the turns the more powerful the motor is. For a 16 turn limit esc you can use any motor above 16turns, but not lower than 16 or you will burn out the esc.

RE: 18R esc ?
If you have the $ to change the ESC I would do that with or without a mod motor. I have seen MANY stock ESC's go up in flames. Novak Micro GT is a good one, it doesn't have reverse in it though. The Spy GT has reverse but it doesn't have the braking power of the Micro GT. Honetly, I would stay away from LRP products. Tekin is supposed to have a good 1/18 scale brushed ESC coming out in a couple of months. Last time that I checked it was about 5 months down the road.
Soldering, if your local hobby shop won't solder the leads for you I would go elsewhere. I have only seen one local shop that doesn't have customer service like that and they wonder why no one wants to buy from them. If you do solder your own plugs on, make sure that you use deans ultra plugs. Soldering is easy once you get the hang of it but you can screw stuff up in a hurry. There are a lot of little tricks to learn. A good iron is a plus too.

Hmm Lrp being a bad product is your own opinion, but definately not entirely true... I have a few lrp esc's and they are great, even the stock esc is good.

Well, i have a 1/18 scale indoor track(www.twodorksrcracing.com), and I also work closely with a local hobby shop and race with them too and we have seen at least a dozen stock LRP ESC's (stock 18T/B/R ESC) go up in smoke. It was a running joke for a longtime that if you were going to run a stock associated ESC you had to supply your own fire fighting equipment also. I got brave the other week and bought a Sphere, haven't had the guts to put it in anything yet in fear that it will go up and take my RX with it too.
As far as getting an adapter to go from a stock plug to a Deans, it would be a lot better to just put deans on it. You are still going to lose energy with the stock plug on there. Deans are almost, if not, a zero loss plug.
I have spoken with Novak and Team Associated both and asked them if it voids the warranty if you go to deans and they have both said no. Also, talking to Associated, they know that there is some sort of a porblem with the ESC but will not recall them. My guess would be bad PR. There is no problem with returning them if (and when) they go up in smoke.
