Default Herr Cherokee/074

I bought a cherokee from the classifieds here on RCU, and man what a beautiful airplane! I flew it without the ailerons b/c the rods binding against the other servos. I am trying to figure out how to remedy this problem. It has one servo in the wing for the ailerons, ( very nicely done mod!) but the ail. rods are hitting the top of the elevator and rudder servos. They are mounted lowest possible with z bends in the pushrods. I dont know what else to do. Anyway, for you Norvel lovers, it hand starts after the glowstarter warms the head, (30 secs or so ) and runs like a top. It will sit and idle so low that you almost cant hear it. This is my first Norvel and wow the power and easiness of it is awesome. Any ideas on the ailerons- I know you guys are used to packing all the goods in small spaces. Happy Holidays

Without seeing the servo layout, it is a bit difficult to help. Is it possible to lay the aileron servo down in the wing (assuming it is standing up and causing interference)? You would need to make a servo mounting bracket, or alternately shrinkwrap the servo and glue in place with something like shoe goo. Shorten both the torque rod ends and go to shorter servo arms to keep the same aileron travel another alternative. Alternately move the other servos to provide the needed space.

Good to hear about the Norvell...I'm building a House of Balsa Spacewalker with this engine, hope to fly around Christmas.

There should be lots of room in a plane that big. What size servos are you using?

HI BIPEFLYER! Can you sink the lower servos down into the floor without butchering things up too much? Could you do with less height on the aileron torque rods?

I am using HS81's and they are moved out to the sides as far as possible and as low as possible without sinking them into the cockpit floor. Anyway, I am trying to not butcher the inside too much, I will figure it out. The airplane flies great with just the rudder if you can handle all the wallowing and side to side motions. Thanks for your help

okay- I put the wing cradle tape/foam on and vualah- it worked! Just enough clearance and now the ailerons are smooth as can be.

I have the same model with the same engine and it is a great flying plane! I too have modified the wing for ailerons. I will post some pix of the wing set up and radio install if it will help ya.

Why- it was designed with no ailerons, I guess it depends on your experience level.

That bird flies really nice with rudder only too. Ailerons is a plus but not a must.

I have flown several types with rudder only. Plug the rudder channel into the aileron channel and use the right stick as normal-no big deal! This airplane flies great with ailerons, and great with rudder only. 40+++ years ago, you only had one stick in your hand and a 40lb airplane, or 30 lbs if you only used three servos.
