Default Wattage Bipe Conversion to Nitro

After 2 dissappointing flight on E-power, I decided to do this.....add an OS .15.

I kept the HS55's, running a 2 oz. fuel tank.

If anyone has any pointers or needs any let me know!

I will follow up with a flight report once I can move again (getting over a scoped knee)

Pete

Sounds good to me! Except for the HS-55's. They sound a bit weak for a .15 plane. Maybe I'm too old school. Maybe.....

It sure looks good!
I would use the least amount of throw in your ailerons to start with, as mentioned in your instructions book. The amount they give should be ok.
I just crashed my Ace Extra with a Wattage Giles wing due to using too much aileron throw, I should have used low rates for my first flight this year. Once it was in the air, I forgot all about using the switch for low rates and it rolled over and went down. (it wanted to roll way too easily, not a good thing just after take off.)
Looking forward to your flight report. Good Luck!

Oh! it's soo cute!

I've got an Ultimate with a Saito 120 in it.

how cute would it be to have a baby ultimate tucked under the tailplane! awwww...

Thanks Lynn,

My radio supports triple rates, which I learned the hard way to always use.

Hmm two comments on the 55's, I didn't think this little thing would move that fast.

Pete,
Make sure your hat is screwed on real tight when you hit the throttle.

Very nice plane, The HS55 is ok for the throttle only! IMO you are asking for trouble if you use these servos on control surfaces. If you fly it gently (like a glider) you will be ok. I don't think that's your intentionwith this plane however. Save your beautifull plane and put some more robust servos on the control surfaces. Then, if your like me, you can chalk your crashes up to operator error (ha, ha) not equipment failure.

Pete Looks great - just like mine!
I have been flying the same plane w/ a FP .15 for about 2 months now and all I can say is it flys great!
It is very easy to take off from the ground ( I used blow up Trexler tires because of our rough grass ) and does not ground loop at all and flys just like the big ones( meaning very easy to control ).
I believe I used FMA 100,s on the three main controls w/ a Hitec 55 for the throttle. I agree w/ the others that if you fly wild and snap and spin you may be sorry to use 55's on all controls.
Anyway- you will love this plane w/ this set up Dale

Cool! Can I ask what your setup is for thrust line when you mounted the .15? Also, What is the vertical performance on your bipe? One more, what prop are you running?

Thanks so much!

Pete I don't know the exact % of down and right ( I eyeball alot ) but I would guess about 1% each way.
The vertical is not unlimited, but It has plenty of power for anything you want to do.
I have used two props so far - a 8 x 4 and 7 x 4 - the latter gives lots of speed while the 8 x gives more thrust but seemed to heat up more. I think w/ my engine a 8 x 3 would be just right - I need to find one.
Hope that helps Dale

WHOA NELLY!!!

She slys like a dream! Nice bird.....

Using an 8x7 with 25% I have been flying for a while...this has got to be the funnest airplane I have ever owned.

I can put around at 25% throttle or hang on the prop at full.

Practically lands herself.

Very fun. Thank you all for your help.

Great, now we know a .15 works well with the Bipes.
Are you using the small wire to connect elevator and rudder? That seemed to be the weakest part on the Giles. I will not use those if I buy another one.
Got any more photos? You need to get one picture in flight.

Pete I'm glad you are enjoying the bipe- I still love flying mine- but one question? What type of 8x7 prop are you using? I can't even consider using that prop w/ my FP .15 or it will overheat as that prop is used on a .25 or .30. Let me know - I would like try one and see how it works Thanks Dale

Lynn---You know, I need to cross check those wires with my buddy's he has the giles and I do not know if the hardware is the same.

Dale---Master Airscrew, I have the O.S. .15 (not the Hi Performance model) about 59.99 teh Hi Po is about 100.00. Very pleased, I could perform any manuever at 1/2 throttle. But. I have not put her through her paces since I still have the HS55's

I've got the Wattage Cub with a Magnum .15 in it. Really stable to fly and will slow right down, though on full throttle it's stupid, way to much... I used Ripmax SD150 servos (9g I think) and a 6g on the throttle, together with a 4oz. tank - runs for ever.
We're going to have a go at towing some small scale gliders with it, like the Robbe LO-100.

I think Wattage must have had this conversion in mind with their kits, as the .10/.15's drop straight into the bearers.
