Bad news about Paul Swanson
I know many of you in the 1/2a forum know Paul Swanson from Memphis. You may not want to hear this or think that this is the proper place to make this post; however, I think I have converted Paul to the "DARK SIDE". Today he flew Control Line solo with a "Flite Streak Trainer" running an Enya 15 III.
He looked just like a 12 year boy out there in the center of the circle. He even said he might get one of the "Flight Streak ARFs". Don't be hard on him, we all would like to recapture our youth and C/L flying is one of the best and cheapest ways to do so.
Jack Jackson from our club also flew Control Line solo today. I have never had so much fun training people to fly Control Line in my whole life. I invite and challenge everyone to give it a try.

NOOOOOO !!
It's out, we are all harboring some long lost control line feelings!![:@]
I still have about 10 of them hanging around and have bought three more in the last few months. I would never fly them,,, oh no,,, I have too much pride[:-]
Just don't watch me too close, because I will fly them in the dark to hide my shame!!
Talking about it will make me have to go to the CL anonymous meetings with the rest of the closet CL fliers!!
Looks like it's my turn to buy the donuts!
Great to hear of grown men having some real fun!

Hello, my name is Milton Dickey. The group says: "Hi Milton." I'm a ukie Cox-a-holic. I've been trying for years but can't kick the habit! I'm building one right now to help stop the pain.

For those who will be at LR SMALL, I will bring my "Grin Reaper". Feel free to come out to the circle and try your hand at 1/4a control line. Every one who flew this little plane at SMALL last year walked away from the circle with the biggest grins on their faces.

Hey lwr_ ,
That Grin Reaper is a vicious looking thing!!
What a great name for it. I know there must be a lot of horror storys about how it tore the arm clean off a man when the slack lines came tight again.
I think that my line control days are why I have no natural fear of being near the ground now, man has that cost me in planes, but what a show!!

Bill,
I like that weight on a string. I once flew a kid's WenMac .049 plastic control line plane, and when the engine quit I found that I could whip it around the circle faster than the engine would pull it. You could keep it in the air that way until your arm got tired or you got too dizzy to keep standing.

RE: Bad news about Paul Swanson
I can relate to the fun caused by flying the Grin Reaper. Last year I built a little plane out of 1/8 sheet and put a TD .010 in front. I used carpet thread for the 12-foot lines - no handle needed, just take a wrap around the index and little fingers.
It was nose heavy and wouldn't loop so I was forced to "stay with it" until the fuel was used up. One of the longest engines runs I believe I ever got from that .010.
When the plane landed, something in my head was still going 'round and I fell down. This was the first time I ever got really dizzy flying CL - let alone fall down.
The plane has only flown one more time with an extra couple of feet added to the lines and some weight in the tail. but it still wouldn't loop.
Sometimes two flights is enough. The engine is back on the Littlest Stick where it belongs. But That one flight I had with it was like the definition of why I keep building and flying model airplanes.

LWR's little Grin Reaper really is a fun little thing. While tough, it is breakable as I proved at SMALL last year : ( I know Louis will get another one put together for this coming year for me to break again. I think the first one took almost 5 minutes to make : )
If you really want to go around in circles fast, then you oughta try my Triumph Cub. It flies on a teedee .010 using 20ft of 8lbs test kevlar fishing line. I even made a special full size handle with tiny line spacing for this plane. It flies just like any of its bigger brethren, but line tension is less than strong....So flying it on a windy day is difficult at best.

Mode 1 = Control Handle in the left hand.
Mode 2 = Control Handle in the right hand.
Just like in R/C, most C/L fliers use Mode 2.
I never dreamed that a thread that started out poking fun at Paul for getting his C/L solo would turn into so much interest in C/L.
Jeremy's Little Triumph is a neat plane. I would prefer a tad shorter lines though, might help with the pull.
How about a C/L Design Contest? Jeremy, your little Chipmunk would make a perfect little C/L.
