Default Norvell 074 question..

Guys,
As I was flying my Scooter yesterday (with the AME 061) I was thinking, man this plane would be even more fun with a touch more power...

I have an unused Norvell 074 in my parts drawer I bought for another plane that didnt get built this winter.

Question: I am currently spinning a 5.5-3 pusher prop on the 061. Is that too small for the 074? If so what sixe pusher should I need? (assuming they make them) Is the 074 OK to use in pusher config? ANyone have any experience with it? WHat about fuel draw? The 061 pulls fuel ok from the low mounted tank so I imagine the 074 would be as good or better?

What you all think? Is it worth a try? The plane is just under 20 ounces. It is quite quick with the 061 but I would like a bit more vertical (I have to dive slightly to do a nice loop) I would like to yank the stick back and go vertical

I would say give it a try I have an .049 on the JK trainer and I'm going to change it to my .061 because of the wind I encountered this morning , if I have to I'll go up to the .074 but I dont think it'll go that far.....Rog

They use a 7x3 tractor so it stands to reason that it would use the same size pusher.
You've read many posts about bent rods..so overrevving with a small prop may not be the wisest way to go.

The Norvel engines run pretty cool so I don't think it would hurt to use it as a pusher.

I use a 7X3 on my .074s; I think a 5.5X3 is a little small. Great Hobbies has Zinger 7X3.5 pushers and Graupner 7X4 pushers listed on their site.

One other thought is check with LMH in that forum or that company lots of problems with the heli version of the .074,, I'm sure you could use the larger cylinder head and since the rod is the problem there are probably several around..like the .061 I sent you so I could change to the .074, and I may even try an OS .15 from a car in my heli....Rog

I don`t think fuel draw will be a problem, I`d strap on a 7by3.5 pusher and go for it. I`d make up a paper thin PTFE thrust washer to go behind the prop drive, but thats about it.

I'm sure this Prop does not come in a Pusher, so the info may not be useful. But, I like the APC 6.3X4 so much, that I just had to post here. They call it a racing .15 sized prop, but it is just exceptional on the .074Norvel.

One of the problems with LMH or any heli is that you put the motor on and start it at idle. As you know the Norvel is fitted quite tightly and the rod will really take a beating and fail if this is done.
Heli flyers are not inclined to actually break in the motor with a prop so the motor gets a bad rap because of it.
Another motor that had this happen in helis was the MDS 38 almost all of them that I saw in helis broke the rod within 1/2 hour of running. Russian motors seem to all be fit a little tighter at the top then other motors, not a bad thing just calls for some care in the break in

Hi AJ,
I have several white Grish Tornado 6-4 nylon pusher props that I would be glad to drop in the mail to you. They were for a pusher project I had years ago that never worked out. If you would like to give them a try drop me an email and I will be glad to send them off to you.

thanks but untill I decide 100% to try it I dont need any more props. I may try the 061 some more, and leave the 074 for later on this summer. but the power would be nice
