RE: downsizing plans for 1/2A ???
REQUIRES: .32-.40 2 stroke or .40-.48 4 stroke engine, 4 channel radio with 5
servos (2 servos run the ailerons), a Y harness, 2 rolls of covering,
miscellaneous hardware (see primary required items in the ACG),
& miscellaneous building & field equipment. Also requires a
2 1/2" to 2 3/4" spinner or a prop nut.
SPECS: Wing span: 48" Wing area: 578 sq in Length: 42"
Wing loading: 14-16 oz sq ft Weight: 3.5-4 lbs
Center of Gravity: 3" (76.2mm) back from the wing leading edge
why not just make Matchlesaro's half wit? or get a CrazyMax (Wattage)
and put a Norvel on the nose,, thats been done too......Rog

A linear scale-down of 62% will give you a 225 sq.in. model, probably just right for a Norvel .049. When scaling down, if you find an in-between wood size results, use the next smaller size. Things get relatively stronger as you scale them down.

RE: downsizing plans for 1/2A ???
design man,
i was thinking a cox B/W or TD...i have inlarged a plan before(LS150),but this is something new for me to try...thanks,will try it 62%...
lynn,
your right that is way small...i was thinking 1/2 the size of 48 in.a 34-36 wingspan would be a more reasonable and realistic...
rog,
i agree that, that is a bit to much for the .020...
pigg,
i don't know how to build light...every time i try,i seem to over do it[X(]...

JBOY! The way to shift gears mentally to build light, is to forget everything you learned about the way .40 sized kits go together, and for that matter forget about commercial 1/2A kits.
get a cheap digital scale.
don't use epoxy, use medium ca or TITEBOND
don't use paint
select your wood with care
tune in to the HALFWIT thread to see how the pull/pull control is done.
build small, and use small wood
avoid plywood at all costs. 1/32 can be used to reenforce wing dowel locations
dont use 2-56 steel control wire, bend your own from 1/16 brazing rod or lighter music wire
make some FUGI fuel tanks
open frame wings and skip the sheeting, the covering provides the strength
get light onboard radio equipment
try craftstore cellophane and spray adhesive for covering, it's weightless
I hope this helps a little. I have an assortment of drawings for planes that build fairly light and quickly if you're interested. The postage on the last one I mailed was $4, and $2 to make the copy, so I've got to charge $6 now for plans.

those are great tips...i use a few of them allready...the only ply i ues is 1/8 for the firewall, the rest is balsa...i try to keep everything under 3/32 balsa, except for the wing spars(they are 1/8)...the fugi tanks are wornderful...i learned how to make them here and have made two so far...
rog,
i'm tring to get a few plane ready for your small fly...ones ready(LS150)ones in the making(glow power GP tutor)and one in the brain(not real sure what yet)...have you nailed down a date yet???
