Default Built-up electric kits that will convert to 1/2A glow

In the 1/2a plans thread, I mentioned the hobby lobby mini telemaster, and ecan has lit into the Herr park flyers for 280 electric..
putting on a babe bee instead..

hobbyhangar.com has some too.

Are there other built-up kits aimed at electric that would be good behind a wee castor oil sprayer?

I look at many electric planes, and they are often arf.. and expensive.. probably not fuel proof either.

I may have figured out why the hobby lobby mini telemaster is sold for so cheap-

the plane is thirty dollars, but all the electric stuff and radio etc to get it complete comes to more like 400!
So the kit may be a 'loss leader'..

I think I'll order one before hobby lobby gets wise to our intent to use a glow engine on their plane!

now don't take my word for it,but i think any speed 280 to 400 electric model would work fine for 1/2A...the 280 models,i'd use a .049-.051...the speed 380-400,i'd use a .061-.074...people are flying GWS warbirds on a wet pack...it should be good for any other park flyer model...not to mention the drop in weight...

In that case (400 electric = .061-.074)
Check out these guys who are the makers of some of the kits marketed by hobby lobby:
[link=http://www.aerocraftrc.com]aerocraft[/link]

For example they have the super cub kit (in the 'scale' page) that hobby lobby sells but theirs is a few dollars less..

The description of the super cub states that it works well with 1/2a texaco! Also see the farman on that same page.
Nice big kits for less than 30 dollars..

Lots of built up goodies on that site. Some interesting things on the 'Model Air Tech' page too.

.Here is a page of a super cub that a guy built- looks better than the advert!-[link=http://www.cpinternet.com/~mmmpc535/Hobby/HL_010_SuperCub.htm]pretty super cub[/link]

I guess with all the 400 electrics out there the conversion possibilities are vast..

that would make a great convert...when building cut as much weight as possable...the description says it RTF is 20oz...if you can cut it down to 16-18oz,it wold fly much better on .049 power...but if you can't cut the weight...put a .061 on it...you might need the extra power...

maybe someone else will chime in on this...i learned all of this from the guys on this forum anyway...i've allready learned so much tha i don't know if my brain can keep up with it all...

all of HL's stuff is like that,, you cant get it anywhere else but at $70-$120 for a foam plane without an engine...who cares?

I'm not too keen on foam either, 'specially the ones made out of the same stuff ice chests are molded from. I can't get over the thought that an ice chest costs like three dollars and was probably every bit as hard to manufacture. I suppose it has something to do with volume of sales..

I think i got jaded on foam when I filled and sanded and sanded and fillled then warped the thing with too much heat on my iron..
that was decades ago..

That's why I was talking bout built-up types- the balsa kits for electric seem sometimes to be priced lower than I expect..
think i'll shut up and just order the mini-telemaster already!

Check this one out....I've done the conversion to VA power before and can attest to the suitability for glow conversion.

All GWS warbirds make a easy transition to glow.I have been flying a Zero with an .074 in it for about a year now. This thing tears up the sky.Power to weight ratio, lets just say when i launch it, i run it at full power and let go.Im finishing up my second Zero with retracts, dummy radial engine, new cowl, new tail group, new canopy and will be painting it to look like a Texan.By the way you can buy these kits with out the motor and paint, making them cheap and very durable.I will be posting some pictures in the near future.Regards Chris.

Forgot to mention that the .074 is over kill, these planes would fly easily on a .049 or 061.

Check out the Pica warbird kits in 1/12 scale - they are really stout built-up kits that work well for IC or E power. I have three of them, two of which have run on both. I bought them online at Sheldon's Hobbies and they were less than fifty bucks. Throw the gear away when you build them and reinforce the underwing and fuselage with some fiberglass and resin for belly landings. The Fw-190 is a bit too much with a .15; had I known, I would have bought another .09 like I used in the Bf-109. They both fly great with a speed 600 and 8 cell 1700 mah pack.

Fritzke,
I'd had exactly the same idea as you (!), but was going to install the P.A.W 0.033 Diesel so I could turn a nice 8 inch wood prop.
Dave
P.S. The only reasondidn't follow through with the idea was because getting stuff from Hobby-Lobby as an International can be a bit of a pain.

Well, it's not a kit but I think this would be an awsome 3D flier with a Norvel 074 in it. The 061 would certainly fly it well but I'm not sure it would hover. Mind you the model would be a bit lighter without the motor battery pack so.... The Jumping Jack....

...and the Flubber...

It certainly seems that the electric 3D field is where the truly interesting stuff is happening these days.

just read the review on the GWS stearman, here on RCU...i bet that would make a good choice for glow...maybe a .049-.061 for power...

Shackas,

An 8" prop on a PAW .033? [X(]
And I thought I lugged mine down with 7x3's!
(Normally use a 6x4 though....)

And that plane is from Hobby Shack....er
Hobby People, not Hobby Lobby. "Machs nichs"
on the price of shipping one to the other side
of the planet though.

PAW .033 R/C's, gotta love em!
John Deere still sells unadulterated ether. Add
kerosene and Sig castor, and yer good to go!

i have just built a herr engineering cub park flyer,it was supposed to have a 280 motor in it,i put a cox black widow in it with a 6x4 prop put on backwards to calm it down a bit, it flies very nicely with flights of about 5 minutes on an external 1-oz tank.

The mini telemaster got here today- that was fast!
Only had time to open the parcel and gaze at the plans a little..
I had my herr star cruiser spread all over the dinner table when the parcel showed up, so I was able to compare the two..
The first thing I noticed is the telemaster somehow managed to be crammed into a box that has about half the volume of the herr box. Inside the box, the smell of balsa, rolled plans and a few page instruction manual.
Whole lotta sticks in this one, compared to the Herr, which has sticks and a bunch of sheets of balsa..

The telemaster is bigger than the herr, but not by that much.. looks like a .074 might be a go..

I might have to move the firewall back some for that one, but a .061 norvel should go with the firewall where it is on the plan..whudayathink?

i think you need to send me a copy of the plan...the .061 will be a nice fit with no changes...BUT if you want the power,it's a minor adjustment to fit the .074...you'll have a lot of room for the fuji tank in the nose...

I received a mini telemaster about a month ago...what to do? Reduce the dihedral and add alerons and maybe an .061? How's the airframe going to react? Any thoughts, suggestions or inspirations?

This page has a cad file of an electric 400 conversion of the telemaster..
it's smaller and different than the mini telemaster plan tho..

[link=http://www.cpinternet.com/~mmmpc535/Hobby/rcinfo.html]electric plans etc..[/link]

Hmm the .074 and ailerons? I'd wanna see the old rcm plan or the telemaster 40 with ailerons to see the angle..
