Default AJ....here are the tach numbers..

....for the TD bottom end you sent me/ BW top end.
My GloBee tach came in yesterday and I have been playing with it some. It seems the numbers will vary a lot at times. Then sometimes the reading is very steady. I must be moving or something.

all engines are using the same Master Airscrew 6 x 3 prop. and Byron's 1/2 A fuel, 25% nitro. I know the tach numbers will be higher with a 5 inch prop.

Black Widow 12,600
the TD/BW 13,200
AP .061 14,000 +

Babe Bee (almost new) 13,000 + ????

The Babe Bee may have a TD head on it. I will have to swap heads with the BW to check for any difference next time. The Babe Bee with the slit exhaust ports really runs strong.

This was a static test and none of the planes or engines were moved. This is my first time to try to get some readings and they may improve next time.

Lynn,

Those numbers are VERY LOW. Your TD/Black Widow should be turning 16/18,000 without breaking a sweet! I am not a big fan of MAster I'm Screwed props. Try a different prop if you have any.

Later,
Tim

Tim, I have used the 5 x 3 cox prop and noticed the engine screams but the plane is not as fast. I can do some testing now since I have a tach.

Lynn, try making sure you have good light on the prop. Sometimes when I try to tach engines in low light I have to go fetch a flashlight to get good readings.

Larry, I checked outside in daylight. Does it matter if you are in front or behind the prop?

I have a TNC tach and before that I had a Heath Kit tach. Both of those will work on either side of the prop.

Larry,
It seems to do better from the front. I guess it can see more of the prop.
The instructions say check from the back, thats why I asked.
Thanks, Lynn

Lynn, does the tach have a switch to allow for taching both 3 blade and 2 blade props?

yes, I have it on the two blade prop.

I think the readings will get better when I am able to lift the planes up and get a better needle setting and let the engine clear out. I had the planes tied to the top of a push cart and the TD/BW was on a test stand.
I can say the TD/BW ran for a heck of a long time on one ounce of fuel.

What is the most popular size prop? I know it takes a 5 inch prop to get high rpms, but I thought most use a 6x3.
